| why I like *Psych* tv show. Needles 05:13:52 |
| | I really do like the new USA channels offering called "Psych" it is for me a wonderful parody of two of it's other TV shows, Monk and the Dead Zone. As well as such TV shows the Closer, Ghost Whisper, Medium, Numbers, and Criminal Minds. It's central character is a brash, borderline obnoxious faux psych who manages to tick just about everybody off, and he knows it. This satire of a show pokes fun at other police procedural , private detective and supernatural investigations genres. Much in the same way that the movie *Scream* poked fun the Horror Films. This program could evolve over the seasons into parodying new shows and dropping old shows. Along the lines of DNA Whispers for want of a better phrase.

| Best drivers? Meagain 02:44:32 |
| | I've been out of the Nvidia loop for a couple of years but I'm going back in. My new rig will have a GeForce 7600GT. This one in fact:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150141
Any advice on which driver set I should use? It'll be with an Asus socket 939 mobo and Athlon 64 4000+ (if that makes any difference).
Thanks for any input.

| ATI WDM install hang. McGruff 02:05:50 |
| | I've got a AGP X850 XT. When I install this new 6.7 version, it hangs on the ATI WDM install. Specifically the IKernel.exe program.
I've tried almost everything. (i.e. removing all drivers, rebooting many times, starting in safe mode, etc.) I just cannot get the ATI WDM to setup correctly. The video card drivers and CCC install just fine.
What gives?

| Radeon 9800 & Windows NT 4.0 Andrew Aronoff 22:00:30 |
| | I have a multi-boot system and have Windows NT 4.0 SP6a installed on one of the partitions. I'm planning to upgrade my video card to a model compatible with Vista Aero and am considering the Radeon 9800. ATI's support of NT 4.0 is a bit fuzzy around the edges. (OTOH, NVIDIA's support is clear.) The ATI web site's "Download & Software" menu contains a "Windows NT" link that leads to the following driver: Windows NT 4.0 Display Driver build 4.3.4013 7.70-020418M-003815C
That driver claims support for the following Radeon models: ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON RADEON 8500 RADEON 7500 RADEON 7200 RADEON 7000 RADEON 64MB DDR RADEON 32MB DDR RADEON 32MB (SDR) RADEON VE
The Release Notes, displayed via the link at the bottom of the page, contains the following information:
A) SUPPORTED ATI PRODUCTS> The display driver included in this package is for Microsoft Windows NT4.>This driver may be used with ATI products based on the RADEON This suggests that the driver will work with _all_ Radeon models. Googling for info about the Radeon 9800 and Windows NT 4.0 came up empty.
Does anyone know first-hand if an ATI driver is available for the Radeon 9800 under Windows NT 4.0 Workstation SP6a?
I don't need the most recent driver package. I don't need multiscreen capability. I just need to be able to boot into the O/S and run at 1024 x 768, 32 bpp.

| AGP card advice please John Lord 21:47:54 |
| |
I have a AGP setup but the current card a GeForce 6600GT (have been very happy with it), but it's struggling to run new games at a decent frame rate at 1280 x 1024, the native setting of my monitor. Will be upgrading the full pc in a years time, and this one will being going in to my daughters room.
So looking at one last upgrade for my current AGP PC;
PM800- M2 Mother Board P4 3ghz 1gb RAM 800gb hard disk space
If I bought the Gainward BLISS GeForce 7800 GS+ SILENT 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (AGP), would my current CPU get bottlenecked? would it be able to handle newer games, ie oblivion call of duty 2 etc? does anyone have a similar system or comments that would help?
Thanks
John

| salvation Revbiff 17:28:28 |
| | There are two guys who have been lost in the desert for weeks, and they're at death's door. As they stumble on, hoping for salvation in the form of an oasis or something similar, they suddenly spy, through the heat haze, a tree off in the distance.
As they get closer, they can see that the tree is draped with rasher upon rasher of bacon. There's smoked bacon, crispy bacon, life-giving juicy nearly-raw bacon, all sorts. "Oh my, Pepe" says the first bloke. "It's a bacon tree!!! We're saved!!!" "You're right!" says Pepe.
So Pepe goes on ahead and runs up to the tree salivating at the prospect of food. But as he gets to within five feet of the tree, there's the sound of machine gun fire, and he is shot down in a hail of bullets. His friend quickly drops down on the sand, and calls across to the dying Pepe.
"Pepe! Pepe! What on earth happened?"...
With his dying breath Pepe calls out...
"Ugh, run, run!... it's not a Bacon Tree...
Scroll Down...
...it's a Ham Bush"

| | Boy George to Pick Up Trash in Aug. Heat
Jul 31, 7:37 AM (ET)
NEW YORK (AP) - Boy George will perform his court-ordered community service by picking up trash on city streets in the August heat, a sanitation spokesman said.
The one-time Culture Club singer will be issued a shovel, broom, plastic bags and gloves when he reports for five days of work on Aug. 14, department spokesman Vito Turso said.
"This is the epitome of community service," Turso told the Daily News for Monday editions. "It's not like he's going to be working in an air-conditioned office."
Born George O'Dowd, the singer has struggled with drug problems for years. He was ordered to do community service after pleading guilty in March to false reporting of an incident. He called police with a bogus report of a burglary at his lower Manhattan apartment in October, and the responding officers found cocaine inside.
Turso's statement was the first indication of what sort of work the singer would be given. He could be assigned to pick up streets in Chinatown, Little Italy, Nolita or parts of the Lower East Side.
O'Dowd, 45, became an '80s icon with his androgynous appearance and vocals on hits like "Karma Chameleon" and "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" A Manhattan judge threatened the singer with jail time if he failed to complete his five days before Aug. 28.

| Diagnosing locking problems after X850 Flash Bd 08:37:45 |
| | Hey, all.
Bought an X850 Pro last week, an Arctic Cooler 5 and Some Arctic Silver.
Installed the cooler. I used the Cooler's pads on the RAM, and did not try to use any AS on anything but the GPU.
flashed it to X850XT PE BIOS (one which purported to include 'fan control'), and the flash process appeared to work - I now had 16 pipelines instead of 12, and my default speeds were 540/590 instead of 500/500.
Reinstalled the 5.6 OEM Catalyst drivers, and found that the Overdrive panel was now available. I'd done some reading and it had been suggested that only the XT will let you into the Overdrive area of CCC.
Ran the latest 3DMark, and got a roughly 10% overall increase in performance. That kind of an increase is nice, but I'm not convinced it's worth it, given subsequent behavior.
Ran some games, and got my first VPU alert - I'd been running FEAR I think, and it locked up.
Tried Half-Life 2 this morning and it also locked up once - but previous sessions in that game had gone for far longer than this one, and HL2 is a little wonky sometimes, so who knows if it was heat that caused it.
I ran ATITool - the GPU temp was idling in the mid-40s. It went up to 63, and then my system locked. It had run for about 3 minutes at that point, and no errors had been reported. Not sure if it was the vid card that siezed or the CPU, but I had to do a hard reset.
Next step will be to use ATITool to bring the speeds back down to 500/500, and see what that does to ATITool's behavior. If _that_ makes no difference, I'll try to flash back to the original firmware (which I'd backed up previous to flashing).
If anyone has any other ideas/suggestions, I'm all ears.
Thanks,
BD

| Uninstalling CCC Wathil 01:24:37 |
| | Ok, I want to uninstall everything. The CCC, the Drivers, and WDM. The version is 6.7
I want to replace with Omega Drivers.
My fear is that there will be a conflict with anything Ati remaining in my system. I have heard of third party programs that clean drivers, but I think when I used them before, it caused problems with my computer, not sure but I have a brand new clean installation and I do not want to take the chance.
I have heard of Ati's CAT-uninstaller but the version that is on the Ati site seems rather old (10-8-2003) and is located here:
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=293
Will this 300kb utility work on my Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro AGP 256?
If it will work, what is the procedure? I am new to the world of Ati so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

| Looking for non-gamer video card Josh 16:51:01 |
| | Been a few years since last built a PC (pre- pci-e).
Building new computer for a non-gamer. Will do some limited video editing. Intel 820 cpu, Intel 945 mobo. 1 gb RAM.
Looking for around $50-55 range. 128mb RAM onboard at least.
bit confused though, for example this card (which happens to be the cheapest)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814141035
I see that a lot of the cheap cards are half-size........is there a reason for that? I know a slimline case (or whatever they're called) would need one, but is there any other reason?
And, the cable connecting the D-SUB and DVI, I assume they are for dual monitors? With the cable connecting them together, it definetly looks 'cheap' (which it is, of course). Or is that just for the 'feed' from the D-SUB to get to the card? If that were the case, the cable would go to the card, not the DVI.........?
Some of these cards say S-video out, and some say HDTV, but some have both, for the same port. How is that possible?
I like this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130006
except it has heatsink only (passive). I know that if you're a gamer, then you're need the fan, but opinions on a non-gamer needing fan?
Also, this whole "TC Supporting 512MB (On board 128MB) " deal confuses me. I assume that this computer/this purpose, that I'll have 128mb straight out of the box, no problems. But how do you get 512mb? Does it 'steal' some system memory? Or uses onboard hardware/overclocking to accomplish it?
Anyways, thanks, Josh
