| How to backout of Solaris 10 kernel patch - Newbie question Underh20 Scubadiving 12:10:29 |
| | Dear Sir/Madam,
I've just applied a kernel patch #127111-10 at our Solaris 10 server which runs Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle with root mirrored and encapsulated. The command I used was "# patchadd 127111-10". The server has been running that kernel patch for 2 days. Unfortunately, we've been asked to back it out for trouble-shooting purposes. How does one back out the patch to the previous version of 127111-09? Can I just do "# patchrm 127111-10" according to the readme. Is there anything we need to be aware of before and after running the patchrm ? Down the road, is it ok to reapply the 127111.10 again ?
Thanks,
Bill

Boa Sorte.

i was running solaris 10 (latest release). of course nothing works.
is there a way to boot cdrom and run off the cdrom?
if not, i will have to move the hard drive to another machine and recapture my valuables. this is on an ultra-2, so it is relatively easy to do. --

| ZFS and "real"-ish storage? Matt McLeod 22:31:16 |
| | So far I've only played with ZFS in JBOD scenarios, but I'm about to get my hands on a StorageTek 2540 with 12x300GB disks and am trying to decide how best to set it up.
Should I be looking to use the hardware RAID support in the 2540 (presumably split into two RAID5 LUNs plus a pair of spares) and hand those over to ZFS as simple vdevs, or should I have it present as a JBOD and let ZFS manage the disks?
And if so, what config is going to work reasonably well? Too many disks to do a single RAIDZ2. I suppose the same 2x5-disk RAIDZ with a pair of spares could work, but I'm leery of -- without fully understanding, I admit -- the flaws in single-parity RAID5/Z. Mirroring could also be an option, but it feels like that'd be wasting a fair bit of disk.
I've got some time to play with it and test a variety of configs, so all I'm looking for is broad indicators of what's sane and what's not. It'll be hooked up to an X4600 for use as a Sybase ASE system running Solaris 10, and while I'm aware of the database performance issues with ZFS it'll still knock the socks off what it's replacing so we're prepared to eat that.

| How to change graphics card on Solaris ? Michelle 21:03:33 |
| | I have Solaris 10 x86. I'd like to upgrade to a new graphics card, that is on the HCL approved list.
I shut down the system. I then installed a new graphics card. Boot up the system. It will boot up but will not allow me to log in. So I shut it down again. Took out the new graphics card. Boot up the system again. The system logs in OK with the old graphics card.
Then, I used "xorgcfg" to change the graphics card setting first. I shut down the system. Installed the new graphics card. Boot up the system. But the system will not log in either. So I have to log in remotely, copy back my original "xorg.conf" file. Shut down the system. Took out the new graphics card. Reboot again under the old graphnics card, then, the system will log in.
What is the proper way to install and configure a new graphics card on Solaris 10? Thanks in advance.

| NIS and Autofs Subs 19:01:43 |
| | Hi. Need some help/direction. I've been searching for a concise answer to no avail, hence the post. I'm trying to apply a direct map using NIS. I have auto_master and auto_home and auto_direct in the NIS namespace:
# ypcat -k auto.master +auto_master /home +auto_home -nobrowse /net -hosts /- auto_direct
# ypcat -k auto.direct /usr/local buzz:/usr/local
I have set up nsswitch.conf to use NIS for automount: automount: nis files
It appears that I have to have these entries in the clients local auto_master file, else nothing works. The auto_master file on the client has to be manually set up as i've shown in the NIS map above. The client does correctly do a NIS lookup or the actual auto_home and auto_direct maps fine.
I'm confused.
I got the impression that I could also use NIS to hold the auto_master map, but with my current NIS config it doesn't work without the local auto_master file. I've restarted autofs or run automount after making changes to the direct maps.
From what I can gather from the automount man page, it says that the +auto_master entry at the beginning of the auto_master file tells it to go look at nis for the master map yet it fails to. If I remove any of the map entries from the client be they direct or indirect automount fails to mount the NFS shares. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong or what I might have misunderstood?
Cheers

| Sun Ray SRSS cluster using GNOME: esd issues Damon Getsman 17:59:55 |
| | I am currently administering a Sun Ray cluster utilizing SRSS for a WAN with approximately 40 users. I hope you will forgive me for my neophyte level of knowledge on this setup. Their desktops are all GNOME 2.22, and the cluster is set up to allow their access with individual smart cards.
I have had a problem described to me for a project by the administrator who is still training me on the admin of this system, as my previous knowledgebase is basically all networked linux PC administration. The problem is, as I have been told, an issue with the enlightened sound daemon when the users login multiple times at once (I'm not even sure how this is possible with smart card logins; I'm just running with what I've been told at this point). There are three servers which the user logs into from the various terminals. Evidently they are set up to round-robin the resources. Anyway, when a user is logged into all three machines and attempts another login, obviously it goes back to the first server in the list. When this happens, the /tmp/.esd socket and/or lockfiles prevent sound capability from the most recently authenticated terminal.
I was wondering if this is a common setup and if there are any resources that I can use to try to find information on this setup to fix the issue. I could write a python script to be invoked at some point while gdm is starting up, but I'd like to find a fix that isn't as kludgy, if at all possible.
Being as I'm going to be administering this system for some time in the future, I'm also interested in any resources you could point me at that would be relevant to this sort of setup. I haven't had much luck finding documentation on the sun website relevant as of yet.
Thank you for your time and help.

| (mirroring &) ZFS: 9=no-ZFS; 10=yes?; 11=open=ZFS (improved)? David Combs 11:11:07 |
| | My last-night's posted question on mirroring suggested ZFS as easiest way.
So, how to get ZFS.
Right now, I have 9. (Have been negligent not going to 10.)
Also, I hear people here (c.u.s) being so haappy with "open" solaris "(to be s11) -- probably bug-free enough for me, for simple programming and browsing (firefox, but SLOW it is) but no NFS no networking (except plugging into household net, for fast internet access). Simple stuff indeed.
Questions:
1: should I go to 10, or straight to "11"?
2: the suggested ZFS, suggested not quite ready yet, what about that?
3: with ZFS, is letting someone login to one of its padded-cells 100% (99.99%) safe, in that he can't access anything you don't want him to?
4: If ZFS isn't fully out yet, when might it be?
THANKS!
David
PS: any decent s10 books yet coming out? (I will periodically be asking this same question.)
Heck, why doesn't Sun PAY some people, like from this group, to do it -- or at least one on the new features in 10, in "11", etc!
