I have a legal copy of Windows 2000 Professional. I can find the install key or serial number or whatever they call it but not the CD.
Actually, it belongs to a friend who asked me to fix it for him. Something failed to exit on logout so his wife cut the power.
It refused to even go to safe mode when he passed it to me, but I got a DOS prompt and installed all the updates on a Feb 2004 CD from Microsoft (hoping that the corrupt file would be one of the files updated).
Now it can boot into safe mode, but not 'regular' and when it fails, it fails to identify the corrupt file.
All the web pages I looked at for the error message (KMODE_something) disagree on the cause, and offer fixes that require installing this file or that.
HOW can I obtain (without spending a fortune) a CD or CD image that will help me fix this?
