Dumb question I know but, I have a drive which clearly says it is ultra dma mode 2 and a tool for setting dma modes that only says ultradma/16 or ultradma/33.
So is dma mode 2 ultradma/16 or ultradma/33 or neither?
I have googled till I'm blue in the face and cannot find one simple statement as to whether dma mode 2 is equivalent to either of the ultra/xx modes ro not.

UDMA2 is the same as ATA-16, UDMA3 is ATA-33, and so on.
You should consider getting a new drive. That thing is old.

UDMA2 is the same as ATA-16, UDMA3 is ATA-33, and so on.
Sorry, that's not correct, UDMA2 is ATA-33, UDMA3 is a weird one called ATA-44 which is almost never used.
You should consider getting a new drive. That thing is old.
It might not be a hard disk. UDMA2 is 'normal' for current DVD drives etc.

Who said anything about DVD?
No-one but the OP's words said "I have a drive which clearly says it is ultra dma mode 2" and that doesn't specify if it's a hard disk or anything else. Could be either.
