If you are referring to the way Microsoft validates your Windows OS before allowing you to download patches and software, there is a foolproof method that always works. Buy a legal copy of Windows!

always works.........lol. If you visit some windows groups you will find that this is not the case. MS is pissing off more and more legitimate customers with these validation tools etc. They are causing loads of problems for people with legit copies of windows. As usual MS is displaying the one true american value........ greed.

Not so. The *two* true American business values are greed and arrogance.

Well, I have a legit copy of XP and it doesn't work. But you might not believe me ;)

Why should I? This is after all a newsgroup. Record the process as a video and publish it for all too see. i can provide space in my site. Of course you won't do that, 'cause it's hard to fake such a thing.

As with all sweeping generalizations, their progenitors hope to nullify valid discussion.
I'll grant the probability that most of the people experiencing XP validation problems are those with black market copies. But it's just plain ignorant to assert that it hasn't occured to people with legitimate licenses.

Well, I'll be the first one to admit that there may be cases. But they are a very insignificant minory who can solve it's problem with a simple no-cost phone call or a fax wit the serial number of the product.
I administer a lan with 1289 XP computers with all possible hardware configurations and on of them had this "problem". Nor any of my co-workers at home had any problems. But some of them told me that they know X who knows Y that knows Z that has this poblem. Then when you meet tX they look at you "what are you talking about"... As wit all urban legends there is a bit of true but VEEEERRRRRRYYYYYY magnified.

It is not "may be." Rather, there /are/ cases.

Only insignificant to those who have not experienced it.

And you, as usual, are full of crap. If that's true, why was a link to a Windows forum explaining a fix to this problem posted here just a few weeks ago?

It checks for at least some drivers and non-critical updates. It offered me a couple of updates to my printer drivers last month, and a few non-critical Windows updates this year.

Only for relatively small values of "always". A couple months back, Windows Update wanted to install a new version of the WGA Validation Tool for me before it would proceed. The install failed, and it's failed every time I've tried since.

Then just run system restore, or use the built-in ultra reliable backup system to load a bootdrive image from cd/dvd/other media . [ ]
maybe your problem can be this ? ( or otherwise worked around from there )
Update for Windows XP (KB910437) - (Posted Date: December 08, 2005) Download size: 1.1 MB Install this update to prevent or resolve an issue in which Windows Update and Automatic Updates can no longer download updates after an Access Violation error occurs when using the Automatic Updates service. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

Backups from that long ago have already been overwritten. This isn't a problem I'm trying to solve. I was just pointing out that it's not a "foolproof method that always works".

[InOtherWords] We are more or less not allowed to use that site if we have the 'Home Edition' Bundle of WinXP.

Sure, they're different, but that's like saying this apple is different than that apple. They're both still apples. That's why there's such a thing a the "Administrators" group. No program, and certainly no program or update or anything from Microsoft, should require being logged in to the "Administrator" account. All that should be required is that the logged in account be a member of the "Administrators" group. I have seen some programs so braindead (cough*Adobe*cough), they have a problem installing if you're not logged in to the "Administrator" account itself.
As a long time LAN Administrator myself, I know of what I speak.

I agree with you. I merely stated why the user could not get access to the site I didn't make the rules !! Incidentally you don't actually have to log into windows as the administrator just right click on the update icon and select "run as" then select administrator hope this helps.
