Painting a CRT & Brightness Problem Travis King 19:27:26
I'm thinking about painting a CRT that I have black to match my computer as
the picture quality is great but the beige looks horrible. It's a Compaq
P110 21" and I picked it up for $10. My Proview 19" that I have is black
and matches my computer, but I think the gamma went out or something in it
because the screen is always dark even on 100% brightness - I have to use
the software on my video card to adjust the brightness. (And it so happened
that the screen lost its brightness when I went to increase its brightness.)
Anyway, back to the Compaq P110. I've heard most CRTs have a cage over the
bad stuff that can kill you, but I don't think I really want to tear in it
if it's not certain. Also, how do you open up the casing on this monitor?
If I would be better off not tearing into the monitor, is there a way that I
can cover all the ventilation holes? (The holes on the side are rounded and
the holes on the top are strips, which would probably be easier to cover.)

If I were to fix the Proview, would it really be worth it? Thanks.

USB HD WON'T INITIALIZE Letterman 10:51:01
I've got a 200GB external HD that I was using on my old laptop (PIII 800/ XP)
for about the past year. I just got a new laptop (Athlon 64 3200+ / XP), and
when I hook it up, everything installs, device manager says it's fine, but it
never shows up.

When I open storage manager, it shows the disk as not initialized, and
unallocated. When I try to initialize it, I get an error window that says 'An
unexpected error has occured. Check the System Event Log for more
information..'

When I check event viewer, I get this:

Event Type:Error
Event Source:LDM
Event Category:None
Event ID:2
Date:7/24/2006
Time:2:31:56 AM
User:N/A
Computer:
Description:
Unspecified error (80004005).

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Of course when I check the online site:

We're sorry
There is no additional information about this issue in the Error and Event
Log Messages or Knowledge Base databases at this time. You can use the links
in the Support area to determine whether any additional information might be
available elsewhere

I've tried uninstalling the drivers, rebooting, all that jazz. I checked the
drive on another laptop, fine. I tried a thumbdrive on the USB ports, fine.
Why does this laptop hate this drive?

Strangeneww with new USB key and password/mouse combo Rock 09:14:25
 Hi,

I have XP Pro and have used a normal kb and mouse.

I decided to buy a USB MS fingerprint/mouse combo and a USB MS kb. I also have
a USB2 PCI card.

Now when I cold boot, it stays at the MS XP choice black screen after the bios
and doesn't act to the kboured or mouse.

It is not until I re connect the old mouse and old PS2 kb that it gets past
this screen and loads XP. I can then take them off and use the USB ones.

This seems rather a crazy way to do it and MS could not have this in plan.

So, what am I doing wrong to have this happen.

Thanks

Rock

LaCie Hard Drive drivers Guest 08:06:07
I recently purchased the LaCie 500gb harddrive. It's the one that is
advertized to not need any drivers at all. In fact, to quote the
"getting started guide", all you do is "plug in the harddrive, and it
will work in a few seconds."
However, that is not the case. I am running WinXP Tablet edition, and
when I plug it in, I get an unknown device. When I search for the
drivers, it says that none are found, and that there was a problem
installing the new hardware.

Anyone know of anything I could do?

Stupid question: How do you use BIOS to detect a drive? Guest 08:03:33
I think my internal hard drive (not the main one, one that i added
later for stuff) is damaged. It was working fine (although getting
slower and slower), then all of a sudden yesterday, it became
inaccessible. I don't know what to do.
I searched on the internet and most people suggest using BIOS to detect
it, but i don't know how to do it.

Also, i have a bt program running that saves onto E drive (damaged
drive), and i am unable to open the program because it's trying to
access E. I removed the program and reinstall it and the queues are
still there!!! What should I do?

Thanks!

newly installed hardwares mannie via WindowsKB.com 07:46:36
hi there, i recently upgraded my hardwares-my memory from 256 to 768 and
video card from 128 to 256 geforce6200 series. I just noticed that a balloon
keeps on popping "vitual memory too low" and sometimes my pc hangs up. What
will I do? Or maybe a power failure have caused this because I'm in the
middle of my gaming when a power failure happened and when i opened my pc it
hangs up and windows keeps on asking me if i will run it on safemode or in
normal mode...i always choose the normal mode. PLEASE HELP. THANKS

Dual monitor video card, which one? Bazzer Smith 07:03:48
I am thinking of getting one of these as an alternative to a big monitor.

However I am not familliar with video card jargon and I am baffled by
them, it's like decyphering the enigma code reading about them.

Anyway my current 'card' is a ATI Radeon Xpress 200G, what card
would be suitable for me to run two monitors.

I could go to Radeons sit and try to figure it out from there but
I will probably die of old age before I understand all the goobledegook.

For example here is mycard:-

http://www.ati.com/products/radeonxpress200/specs.html

I understand the first two lines of the spec the rest is b***ocks.

How do I go from there to finding a duel version of the card?
Is there a university course I could attend?

I expect when I find out nobody wil sell it anyway.

moving boot drive to new HD & recovering data from corrupt HD Rob . T 04:41:37

Hello all … I have a two part question, which requires a bit of
background. I am running XP Pro SP2 in with an AMD Anthlon 64 3000+
processor (1800 GH) on a Gigabyte motherboard and 1 Gig of RAM. I have
been running with two IDE drives (61 Gig & 82 Gig respectively) and a WD
250 Gig SATA drive. The WD drive is divided into three partitions: the
C: (Operating System) partition; the D partition which contains other
applications; and the E partition, which contains all of my media files
(music, movies, audiobooks, etc.) and is over 150 Gigs.

Recently I experienced a problem whereby my computer would shut down
after a few hours, and on reboot I would get the message “NTLDR is
missing; press CTRL+ALT+DEL”. I finally realized it was a heat
problem, so yesterday I took my computer in to get the power supply &
fans updated. They checked the WD hard drive and advised me that the
disk was corrupt, and needed to be replaced. It’s still under
manufacturer’s warranty, so I bought a new, identical WD 250 Gig SATA
disk and decided to move everything from the old WD to the new WD,
remove the old WD disk & send it to the manufacturer, and when I get it
back I’ll have an addition 250 Gig SATA hard drive.

After the new disk was installed, partitioned the new WD the same as
the old WD and ghosted the C: & D: partitions on the old WD with
Acronis and copied the data onto the new WD. I then changed the drive
letter for the “other applications” partition to D on the new WD and
erased all the date that was on D from the old WD. So far it’s working
fine, and the computer is reading all of my other applications from the
new WD.

If you’ve read this far, thanks for your patience!!! Now I come two
the two questions / problems I have. They are:

1)How do I make the partition on the new WD containing the operating
system files the boot directory? I know I have to change the drive
letter for the partition to “C” and make some changes in BIOS, but I am
not sure exactly what those steps, and their sequence, are. I’m sure
there are some very easy to use guides out there, but I’ve tried
googling, with no results.

2)When I try to access the partition on the old WD containing all of
my media files via My Computer, I get the message “E:\ is not
accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable”. As I
had mentioned, I have about 150 Gigs of data on this partition … is
there any way I can recover at least some of it?

Many, many thanks for your patience & support!!

Faulty Packaging/Handling of a motherboard? george E 02:01:55
I bought a motherboard off Ebay. It arrived in a box, surrounded by
bubble wrap. The motherboard was not put in antistatic envelop.

What is the probability, in your opinion, that this would cause a
static charge during the shipping process?

CD ANd DVD Burning Tzeff 01:53:02
WHY does CD burning work (with XP!) and not DVD burning ???

I normally copy data to my DVD burning drive and paste it there. Then I
select `burn these files to disc`. )It is then a CD disc!
The DVD drive burns it without problems.

BUT when I insert a DVD disc, it doesn?t recognize it (DVDR or DVDRW). It
just keeps saying insert a CDR or CD CDWR. (why doesn?t it say DVD R or
DVDWR?)

I hear ppl say I should get NERO software, but I disagree.
Windows XP uses ROXIO software (!no need for Nero!) to burn CDs so it SHOULD
burn DVDs too! Or is it possible that the Roxio sofware in Windows XP (tm)
is OBSOLETE and doesn?t support DVD burning???

If that is the case, then Microsoft should rapidly UPDATE the ROXIO burning
software to enable DVD burning!

single side or double sided DDR400 what's the diff Pete 01:42:55
 Hi

I'm going to buy the Asrock 939SLI32-eSATA2 motherboard.
http://www.asrock.com/product/939SLI32-eSATA2.htm

I've been told to go for the double sided memory as it will give me more
options, why is this?

What's the difference and does it really matter?

Also, anyone know aproximately, what the performance his would be between 2x
512MB DDR400 in dual channel and 1x 1GB single channel.

Thanks

Haymish
