| COMPTER FREEZES/CRASHES in minutes IF TOO MUCH USE John 11:39:01 |
| | USING: ABIT BH6 motherboard with 1.3GHz Intel Tualatin processor using an adaptor. WD 250GB & WD 200GB harddrives connected to motherboard with Promise Ultra 100 IDE controller card that came with the WD 200GB Hardrive. Video Card - Ati AIW 128 PCI 16MB.
BEFORE: Windows 98(not SE) was loaded onto WD 8GB hardrive, attached directly to the motherboard, no Promise Controller card needed. Everything worked great. The larger harddrives did have to be attached thru the Promise controller to be recognized by the older motherboard, and they were used for storage backup only. Was a perfect setup, worked flawlessly
NEXT: Wanted to get rid of old WD8GB harddrive, so loaded new Windows98SE onto larger 200GB harddrive, which has to be attached to motherboard with Promise ATA controller to be recognized.
NOW -Problem: computer freezes/crashes, blue screens, or green screens when using any application too long (within the hr), or worse if using many applications at once -multitasking (within minutes). If have too many IE windows open will crash immediately. Also if trying to download something too large (10-50MB, depending) will freeze before completion. If downloading attachment from Outlook Express will usually crash if attachment is 3MB or more. Sometimes less. Also crashing is never the same. Sometimes can squeek more usage out of computer, other times crashes quickly. Also if trying to transfer/move any large file (100MB, sometimes only 50MB, sometimes 200MB) from one location to another in Windows Explorer, will freeze/crash computer. Then when restarting computer after the crash, Scandisk (i use Norton Disk Doctor) always says some files or structures are in error and I end up having major problems, like apps not starting, or email completely deleted, then have to use Go-Back to recover, then start over. What a pain in the butt. NOTE: NONE of this EVER happened "before"(see top -"BEFORE").
WORK-AROUND: The only way I'm able to get anything done is to manually restart the computer before I "feel" it's about to freeze/crash. This "buys" me more computer use. If I do this every 10-20minutes or so, depending on usage, I can use the computer all day or forever without crashes. This is EXTREMELY annoying to have to do -close all apps, save everything, then restart, open apps, continue working, REPEAT IN 10-20MIN. PLEASE HELP.

| Flash drive problem - slow data transfer Guest 11:13:31 |
| | My flash drive (Imation, 1GB) has off late been behaving strangely. Have been trying to transfer data from my PC (Win XP) onto it and it takes 102 minutes to transfer 236 MB of data.
I remember connecting it to a Windows 98 PC sometime back and trying to transfer data. It was not detected on the Win 98 PC. However, could it have been corrupted the FAT due to this?
I tried formatting it and then copying, however it did not help matters. After formatting, it shows the status as healthy. However, data transfer still takes ages!
How do I get the flash drive back in good running condition. Any help from this forum is helpfull.
Thanks in advance,
MA

| Unable to format a hard disk, is it dead? Guest 10:38:12 |
| | Hi everyone,
I'm having a serious problem with my hard disk drive (20 Gb, brand Maxtor). Recently I made several things on it, like installing Ubuntu 4.01 Warty (with Grub as bootloader), removing Ubuntu, partitioning it using FreeFDISK from a boot diskette and so on. But right now, I can't format it. The formatting correctly begins, but around 15% I get the message ''Not ready'' (in fact, ''non pret'' in French) and the formatting process aborts. I tried to make several partitions in order to isolate this location, but it seems that there are other places with the same problem.
Windows Millenium refuses to install, explaining that the formatting doesn't work. My question is: What could be the origin of the problem ? Can I save the hard disk, and if it's possible could you please explain how?
Right now, the only solution I found to post this message is to boot from the live CD of Ubuntu and to post from Google...

| Dell XPS 600 nVidia nForce4 SLI mobo and proprietary power connector Guest 10:12:28 |
| | Hi
I have been feebly trying to determine whether or not the nVidia nForce4 SLI X 16 motherboard on my Dell XPS 600 has some kind of proprietary power supply connector on it. I want to bet a power supply with more Watts but have been told that dell does funky things with power supplies and motherboards. Can anyone help?

| SATAII drive not assigned drive letter after MB change Guest 09:07:33 |
| | Ok... got some confusion and a some frustration brewing here....
I have two SATAII drives an 80 GIG and a 400 GIG. 80 is my OS and 400 GIG is my data.
I changed to a dual proc motherboard and one that supported SATAII, reformated the 80 GIG and thought life would be good.
Why do I not see the 400 GIG... Its there, see it on post and see it under XP in disk manager, but it will not assign a drive letter to it.
Of course lots of sublte changes - northbridge chipset, 4 sata slots instead of 2 (tried them all).
Originally it was a basic disk - my only option is to change it to a dynamic disk.
I have a box of IDE drives here, can drop anyone of them in and they will get assigned a drive letter.
Oh, whats the big deal here? The 400 GIG is filled with data, thats the deal.
1) Why do I not see my 400 GIG and any way I can see it without having to convert it to a dynamic disk? 2) I think the answer is no, but will I lose any data by converting it to a dynamic disk ? ( i know going back to a basic disk will lose data).
Fine, I am an id10t and obviously did something wrong.
Thanks
Scott

| DVD-speler leest geen enkele DVD Bas 08:14:10 |
| | Help!!!!
Alvast bedankt,
Bas.

| General question about firmware Dudley Henriques 07:21:00 |
| | I think I understand that firmware updates for an optical drive are stored in the device's ROM.
If you have to reinstall XP at any time, will the firmware update be lost? In other words, is there any connection between the Windows OS and the ROM inside the device? I need to know if things like firmware and BIOS updates on a reinstall of XP will be kept or will the reinstall wipe out the BIOS and firmware updates? Many thanks Dudley Henriques

| Network Card problem after using Microsoft Update Pud 05:14:20 |
| | I have a problem with a laptop I am trying to get Internet Security software on to for a client. The software wouldn't work so uninstalled it ok.
Did Microsoft Update before trying the install again. There was an updated driver available for the onboard 'VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter'. I included this in the updates. MS Update installed the other downloads but failed on the network driver. Tried downloading and installing the driver from manufacturer (Acer) site. Install failed!
Attempted to use aEdimax USB2/Ethernet adaptor to get online with the laptop to update the driver but that fails to install also. I get the following message from the Hardware Update Wizard (on both the VIA and Edimax driver installs):
"There was a problem installing this hardware:
...xxx...
An error occurred during the installation of the device.
The system cannot find the file specified"
This happens when installing drivers for both the onboard and the USB network adaptors. The USB drivers I have used many times before.
Please help.

| Gamepad Not Working Alias 03:45:02 |
| | Hello all,
My PC ProPAD 4 gamepad is connected to the game port of my SoundBlaster Live! audio card but it's not working. Windows reports the gamepad as not being connected but it is connected. This is weird because I have used this gamepad many times before but now WinXP won't recognize it.
All the drivers for SoundBlaster Live! are installed under Hardware Device Manager so can't figure out what's up. Nothing has changed in my system hardware wise.
Anyone have any ideas about this one?

| Issue with a video driver Roadstergal 03:41:16 |
| | I feel like there's something very basic that I completely missed. My hard drive recently conked, so I have reformatted and reinstalled Windows on a brand-new drive. No problems - except for the monitor. Windows has the monitor as a 'default monitor,' at the moment. I downloaded and extracted new drivers for the monitor (Sony SDM S51) from the Sony site. However, when I try to update the drivers from the Display control panel, the Properties box in the Monitor tab is greyed out (as is the Hide Modes This Monitor Cannot Display, for that matter). I have tried Add New Hardware, and it does not pull out a monitor. There is no monitor listed in Device Manager. I searched, and the only topic vaguely similar suggested restarting in safe mode, but the situation is unchanged in safe mode.

| fans start and then stop Marenpete 02:44:01 |
| | I have a IBM Netvista model 8310 and today when it was booted up the cpu and the frame fans started and then stopped. The power supply fan is running fine. This caused the machine to shutdown (hibernate) until the heat dissipates. Th funny part about this is I can get the fans running using speedfan software so it doesn't appear to be the fans.
Is it the mother board, power supply? Any help would be appreciated.

Something was wrong and I did the Repair procedure from install CD (SP2).
After that I sound card stopped working (throught wave out dont work, direct sound works) Beacouse "Mixer device is not there" type of request, when I try to start sndvol32.
It is SB PCI 128 and it IS in Harware support database and it worked before repair of XP (pro).
I downloaded newest drivers for sound card and installed them. After I do Uninstall/Refresh on Card on Device manager, sound card works and sndvol 32 starts fine and do its job.
But after Restart of themachine , "Mixer not there" problem again and I need to do do uninstall/Refresh as Administrator, every time when I star my machine.
Could anyone help me resolve this problem without reinstalling machine (I have a lot of software I don`t want/cant install all system again.)

| Serial port of MSI RS480M2-IL motherboard. Guest 00:24:01 |
| | Has anyone here tried to use the serial port of the MSI RS480M2-IL motherboard ? I assembled several computers based on this mobo last year, but neither I nor, apparently, any of my customers/clients have had reason to use the serial port until now.
I tried to install an external dial-up modem for a friend today, but Windows could not detect it. To make a long story short, it turned out that the culprit was a mismatch between the mobo serial port header and the supplied internal cable.
The cable is wired according to the usual pin ordering convention, but the header pins on the mobo are *not* numbered in the usual order. AFAIK, such double-row header pins are usually numbered like this -
2 4 6 8 .... 1 3 5 7 ....
but the serial port headers on this mobo are numbered like this -
6 7 8 9 x 1 2 3 4 5
The numbering by itself wouldn't matter except that each pin number serves the same function as it would in a more conventional layout. That is -
1 - DCD 2 - S-IN 3 - S-OUT etc etc
I can't change the pin layout on the mobo of course. I solved the problem by desoldering the wires at the back of the D-sub connector and resoldered them in the required order.
If there's anyone out there who's been having problems trying to get the serial port of this mobo working, I hope this helps. However, it's possible that not all production batches are shipped with this mismatched cable.

| DVI monitor: no video until Windows Starts Dante 23:12:20 |
| | I have a LCD monitor with DVI input. The monitor does not display anything until the Starting Windows splash screen comes up. So the BIOS splash, boot options etc are all missing. I guess this is ok until a problem arises. Is this the nature of DVI or is it my DVI graphics card? It is a ATI Radeon VE -- One of the early dual-head graphics cards, AGP 4X.

| Network Card settings disappear when cable unplugged dreamsoul620 via HWKB.com 22:12:28 |
| | Hi all! I've been messing around with this problem about a week now and I'm completely confused. I have two laptops, a Dell Inspiron 600M and the other a Dell Latitude D610. The network cards are the same in both (Broadcom 440X 10/100 Integrated Controller). I used the Latitude to connect to cameras on a machine. These cameras require me to change my automatic IP setting to a static IP. This works great if I use the Inspiron. However, sometimes when I unhook the ethernet cable from my laptop, the card completely disappears in Network Settings. I cannot even try to change the settings. When I plug the required crossover cable in, sometimes the card reappears, sometimes it takes several restarts. I have uninstalled and re-installed the drivers. The card also disappears when unhooking the crossover and going back to the straight network cable. Basically, when I unhook a cable, it's a toss up of whether my card will still be recognize in the Network Settings. Dell does not have a solution and since the card works, they do not see this as a reason to replace the card. Changing the IP on the Inspiron results in a lot of downtime for my other applications while it's recording the images from the cameras. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how I might fix this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.

| AMD or Intel? Tochiro 22:10:06 |
| | Hello, I do not want to start a processor war here. THe truth is that I do not know the first thing about processors. There has always been Intel processors in my PCs up to now. I am now thinking of buying an AMD system because somebody suggested the processor remains cooler than Intel's and I am looking for a PC as much silent as possible.
My question is: are AMD processors fully supported by software? Is there any risk of malfunction with AMD?
Thank you for your help

| What's really on this motherboard? Guest 21:38:47 |
| | I'm assembling a new computer for the first time in five years, and I've discovered I can no longer understand motherboard specs. I need these capabilites: -Graphics for large, static RGB images -Network connection for Web access -USB for digital camera uploading & control
Here's what I bought (haven't unwrapped it yet):
http://tinyurl.com/e6cn6
It's a question of what "support" means. I can see the sockets on the board for video, LAN and USB. Does this mean that the full capabilities for these things are already on-board?

| Microsoft Elite Keybooard for Blue Tooth and Intellimouse Explorer for Blue Tooth died Broye 21:23:58 |
| | I purchased a Microsoft Keyboard Elite for Blue Tooth and Intellimouse Explorer. It worked perfectly for me for about a month. Then the mouse started to lose function - the scroll wheel did not work. Then the mouse died completely. I looked at the Blue Tooth device in the Device manager and it showed that is was not working with a Code 10. But the keyboard worked fine. I followed the direction on the Microsoft web site and keyboard die also. I have not a clue as to why this happening and how to fix it. I have tried to reinstall and nothing works. I am using Windows Xp Professional SP2. Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me hand.

How can I clear the spool memory? Just keeps printing the garbage two liner. I've tried sending it several different print items from the pc. I'm afraid I may be compounding the problem, if I can't clear the memory.
