| How to determine what caused a blue screen !Tg 04:57:30 |
| | The helpful Microsoft message says that the most likely cause of the blue screen is a device driver. Does anyone know how to determine if a driver is causing it, a piece of hardware, or whatever?! It's very frustrating because it happens about once or twice a week.

| DDR questions Alon Brodski 03:55:43 |
| | Hello!
Couple of things are unclear to me about DDR technology. 1) Dual-channel DDR...the memory modules (actually the pairs of 2 identical ones) that are used...Are they REGULAR DDR modules that CAN be used on a single channel Mo-bo just fine in one by one configuration,or are they specially designed for dual-channeling? My guess-it's the 1st... 2)I heard that the best thing for the PC perfomance if FSB and memory runs at the same speed.Say 800 MHz FSB and dual-channel DDR400 or 800 MHz FSB and DDR2-800 etc. So my quesion is...is it a REQUIREMENT or a preference? In other words, say if I have 400 MHZ FSB and DDR333...Can I still use this kinda configuration? Won't it damage anything? or it would work fine, just a little slower only?

| No POST Guest 02:17:50 |
| | Hi
Just wanted to check I hadnt missed something before I bin this. Machine powers up but doesnt POST. Monitor stays on standby, never wakes.
K6-233 cpu, 64M RAM. Pci video, onboard sound, serial mouse.
CMOS battery was 1.8v so renewed it. replaced ram, still no post checked psu lines, ok checked cables in connectors, all ok removed the only card, video card, still no post disconnected hdd, cdrw, looked for cmos reset on mobo, but oddly I'm pretty sure there isnt one. checked cpu seated ok
The DIMM RAM socket is a horror, takes major force to get RAM to seat in there, and looking at the design I'm surprised it ever worked. Tried each of the 2 sockets just in case.
Its due for the bin, just wanted to check I hadnt missed something. Thank you.

| max size of an external hard drive? Edward Letendre 01:00:48 |
| | I am looking to add an external hard drive to my computer (its a windows xp home edtion computer, made by compaq (sr1811nx). I have read on a few sites that an external hard drive cannot exceed 133 gigs of storage space. I know that my local computer store sells external hard drive enclosures (usb 2.0) and they list the maximum size of a drive for this enclosure is 400 gb. I also have seen that you can purchase a maxtor III external hard drive with a capacity of 500 gb. In either case, if I choose the purchase my own enclosure and add a 400 gig (ide or eide, I get those two mixed up) hard drive or go the route of purchasing the maxtor external drive (with backup software) will I have any problems in using the drive.
I once had a 120 gig hard drive on a windows 2000 server setup in raid mode (single hard drive but the raid controller was the only place I could set the drive up on). Anyway to make a long story short, the hard drive would give me a write error at a certain point and data would be lost when I tried to write lots of data on the hard drive. By the same situation, when I looked on the web, I saw that hard drives beyond 133 gb would give the same write error with my 120 gig drive in windows 2000. As soon as I moved the 120 gig harddrive somewhere else, no more write errors.
So I need advice on how to get around the large harddrive problem (if it is still there) for my windows xp machine (using a usb 2.0 connection).

| Recommendation for 16+ Port KVM Switch Will 00:32:51 |
| | Once upon a time, we had all of our rackmounted server room computers hooked into multiple Belkin eight-port KVM switches, and life was good (or at least tolerable). The customizable menu with names on it would periodically reset itself and lose all values, but at least we could switch from machine to machine. We have "upgraded" to the latest Belkin 16 port model, and it has been pure hell. The device is constantly having problem with keyboard or mouse (sometimes both) on at least 20% of the connected machines. We have tried new cables, and it doesn't seem to make any difference. Belkin replaced the switch, and the problem gets worse. I'm looking for recommendations for a new vendor, possibly a new architecture, for a large scale KVM solution for a server room.
My basic requirements are as follows:
1) Up to 32 computers, each of these controllable from two to four stations.
2) Any station can control any computer.
3) We should be able to run long distance, at least 100 feet, from the keyboard, mouse, and monitor to the actual server.
4) Should allow us to identify easily each machine using a name we can assign to it and then read off the KVM switch on screen menu.
5) Should be incredibly *reliable*.
Perhaps a better solution would be one that puts the port selector right at the keyboard and mouse and monitor, then runs a multiplexed KVM signal over RJ-45 to a back end device that then attaches to each server. I'm open to any and all ideas on how to best accomplish the mission here.

| Switching off wireless signal? Guest 20:42:29 |
| | I'm interested in buying a DLink wireless router and want to know if its possible in general with wireless products, to switch off the wireless signal when I'm not using it (but not unplug the power) and still connect to the unit using wired ports?
I understand you can switch off external access through security, but I'm interested in switching off the "physical" radio signal being emitted from the unit. Is this possible with the following http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=274 or indeed any brand of wireless router?
TIA for any genuine help.

| Tasks requiring FDD... ? Martin D . Pay 16:10:20 |
| | Gentles...
If you have a system with a decidedly dodgy FDD (or indeed a system with no FDD at all) is there any way of carrying out certain tasks that traditionally have always needed doing from FDD?
I'm thinking specifically here of:-
a) flashing the motherboard BIOS
b) loading RAID drivers on a new build system
I'm shortly to start building a new system (something I haven't done for a few years now) and I know the only FDD I have (I mean, who uses floppies these days?) is flaky. This is not an ideal thing when flashing a BIOS!
The RAID question isn't quite so important as I won't be going over to a RAID configuration just yet (I need to buy a pair of matching SATA II HDDs first) but I would be interested in any answers to the question nonetheless!
Thanks in advance to those folks out there who know more about this stuff than I do!
Martin D. Pay Looking forward to replacing his 4 year old system with something that can play the new Doom!

| USR 5699-02 modem stuck on one baud rate Steve McPheters 15:46:40 |
| | Hey all, I have a head scratcher.
I have a dell computer with XP SP2. I am using a USR 5699-02 internal win modem.
When ever I try to dial out the modem always connects at 33600. Doesn't matter what programs I use, it still connects at 33600. I can change all the settings I can find, but it still connects at 33600. The only way I can stop it is to go directly to the modem and enter the at commands to make it connect at another baud.
I have looked at the modem settings in Dev Manager & Phone and Modem. Tried changing these with no luck. I tried changing the baud in the programs I use and it doesn't effect it. I can change emulation, stop and data, etc and it will change, but not the baud.
Another suprising way to change it is to logout and then login as the administrator. Then it will only connect at 14400 and nothing else.
I went into the AT setup on the modem and see that it is using the command for viariable baud, but doesn't seem to matter. Checked the computer's ini files and registry, but couldn't find any strings that might be hidden.
Any one know if there is something I might be missing?

| Help! USB Device is mounted but unaccessable Robert Powell 14:32:19 |
| | This is a weird one, at least for me - I've searched the archives of this and windowsxp.general and can't get any answers so hopefully those with almost infinitely superior knowledge of external storage devices and WinXP vagaries - that'll be you then *smiles hopefully*- will have an answer.
I've ebayed a 4GB USB MP3/Mp4 player, which is extremely nice - it comes with quite a few files which aren't so nice (seriously who listens to Barbie Girl and Say you Say me?) and a host of problems.
I'm running a Dell Dimension 4700, (Pentium 4) with 1 GB of ram and am using WinXP service pack2 with McAfee Firewall.
When I plug the player into a USB slot (I've got both usb 2 and 1.1 slots on my system, and get the same result from all of them) WinXP recognise the player as an external USB storage device, loads a host of generic drivers and gives the drive a letter "Removable Drive G:" which is all well and good.
However when I try to open or explore the drive, WinXP tells me the drive isn't formatted and asks if I'd like to format it. Happy to lose barbiegirl.mp3, I click yes and there my problems begin.
Instead of 4GB it shows 4MB
It only allows FAT formatting
It only allows Default allocation size
Figuring if I can at least format the drive, I might be able get it to recognise the full 4GB, I click Start and it tells me: "Windows was unable to complete the format." Followed by the legend "The disk in drive G cannot be formatted"
Okay - thinks I - I'll checkout disk management, where I can see the following values:
Volume G: Layout = Partition Type = Blank File System = (nothing, there is no entry) Status = Healthy Capacity = 4MB Free Space = 4MB % Free = 100% Fault Tolerance and Overhead = 0%.
Which is just duff info! There is certainly less than 100% free space on the drive - the example files on the drive are close to 30MB.
There should be 4GB on the thing not 4MB - again storing 30mb of files on a 4mb drive is a good trick if you can do it!
And why is there no File system of any kind?
There is a CD of drivers - Win98 drivers that is - but in a futile attempt to get Window's to recognise and access the player/drive I've tried installing them and it comes with a Player Disk Tool and a Player Update tool.
The disk tool, like WinXP, only recognises 4MB and when formatting says there is a Total disk space of, 4169728 bytes, 0 system files, 0 bad sectors, available disk space of 4169728 bytes, each allocation unit is 2048 bytes total allocation units 2036.
All of which is utter nonsense because as soon as I try the player . . . blasted barbiegirl.mp3 is still there, and indeed the entire drive is untouched!
If I run the update it tells me that; "Removable disk is busy, please run the program after waiting a moment."
The player was sourced from Hong Kong so the documentation is translated from Chinese - funny and diverting as all heck with phrases such as "The modification that makes the oneself to correspond clicks the next move behind:" but is as helpful as a gearbox on a pogo-stick!
The player itself works great and is a serious bit of kit - cheaper, smaller and with more features than an IPOD nano - Voice Recording, FM Radio, MP3 playback, Video Playback, Games, all look, sound and work wonderfully but unfortunately they're the ones that came with the player and I can't access the drive to change anything.
Any ideas of how to get to the contents of the drive/player without using a large hammer, or why I'm getting such erroneous partial info from WinXP would be gratefully received.
Regards
Bobble
