I *finally,* after 5 years of playing, ascended a valkyrie named Brynhildr.
I got lucky and found a magic lamp in minetown, blessed it and got a wish (+2 blessed gray dragon scale mail) and then, later, found a very large hardware store with 2 more magic lamps. I managed to get Excalibur around level 8. All good, except I lost my pet in the gnomish mines.
Oddly, despite a lot of sacrificing, I never did get Mjollnir - I had to use a wish once I reached the castle for it. And having been burned by Rodney way too many times, I used a wish for Magicbane, too. I also wished for two scrolls of genocide to get rid of liches and mind flayers.
One of the biggest parts of my game was when I reached Orcus' lair - he managed to summon Yeenoghu, who summoned Demogorgon. I had only ever faced Demogorgon once, and he kicked my keister, so I was afraid it was all over. I knew I had to kill them off or they'd just keep following me. Luckily, I had a ring of conflict so when they summoned nasties it wasn't bad. I just keep applying with my unicorn horn, stood near the stairs, and threw Mjollnir at them repeatedly until they were gone. Once I had defeated them, I knew I had an ascendable character.
I got the amulet without too much of a hitch and got out as fast as possible. The amulet kept bouncing me backwards, but I made it out. After that, the biggest problem I had was finding the portal from the plane of fire to the plane of water. I didn't find the plane of air too bad because I had -29 AC and 339 HP.
Once I got to the astal plane I got lucky because my god's altar was the first one I came to and I only had to face Pestilence, some priests and some insects to get there. I sacrified the amulet and game over.
Mad props to Maniac for his Ascension Guide, which I found very useful. It feels good to finally have gone the distance!
