| | Hey I can hear you... this is a 2002 game but I just got myself a copy. It rocks! I just need to get a hang of the dependancies in the technology tree to get a hang of my units but that won't take so long... Any pointers btw? cb

| | Just started playing this. Why on earth did they decide to implement a '3D' map instead of the tried and tested flat 2D map.
It means that units that are in the background are tiny and blurry and you have to strain to see them all.
Don't suppose there's a setting somewhere to change the map to standard 2D? --

It had a Star Icon It had individual A and B buttons and a combined A+B You would save your game state to files with a .ss0 extension
Does anybody know which emulator this was?

I was thinking about movies based on games. Someday they might make a doom movie, but they could never have a Half Life movie.
By the time Valve authenticated your ticket and they let you in, the movie would be over.

| possibility of winning unspoiled (spoily) David Justiss 21:26:01 |
| | (This message was inspiried by a few things said in the YANI: changing character classes thread) I played for about three years before reading any spoilers, and I had read the guidebook. (Not the Beginner's Guide- the guidebook that comes with the game). So I'm a good example of one who had played unspoiled for awhile, and I think I can speak for them. I also played the old hack before finding out about nethack. As far as I got before reading any spoilers was Medusa's level (but not past the water), had never gotten past level 2 or 3 of the quest, had never conquered Fort Ludios, and had never gotten past the second Sokoban level. Only once had I ever found Fort Ludios. Only once or twice encountered an alter besides the one at minetown. (These are just markers to give you an idea of how far I had gotten and how often, not directly about possibility of winning unspoiled).
OK Things I did not know what they did or did not know any use for: free action sustain ability (thought it made stuff like invisibility, see invisibile or blindness last longer)- "ring of fixed attributes" might be a better name? cancellation coranthaum dexterity (I thought it was for shooting/throwing things) any musical instruments (except the horns that ID themselves) bells dwarvish, orcish cloaks, mummy wrappings (knew nothing of magic protection) any potions of water donating to priests create familiar spell (not that I ever got good enough in spells to cast it) fedora (thought it must have some use) towels (didn't think of wearing a towel) lenses (besides protecting against raven pecking) good uses of getting blind or confused
There are LOTS of things I had never thought of trying before reading the spoilers: polymorphing objects dipping stuff into holy water (I think the only thing I ever tried dipping was a potion of oil into an oil lamp to try to refill it) price IDing (I had caught onto ?oID being the cheapest, but the prices seemed to change enough that I didn't think any other price IDing was possible) engrave IDing with wands shooting wands at myself (for speed monster or teleport) dipping a unicorn horn into potions that pets would step on cursed objects if there was food there helping a pet or other monster out of a trap Never figured out how to convert an alter OK, those things I could've thought of and probably would have eventually if I hadn't spoiled myself, but here are some things I likely would never have figured out: using a pit and a boulder to get rid of the iron ball praying on an alter to change plain water into holy water why a bag of holding would explode when I put an unIDed wand into it greasing a bag or a cloak wearing a mummy wrapping to make myself visible, or why a potion of invisibility was sometimes permanent (I would just quit if I stayed invisibile much longer than it usually wore off) repairing armor and weapons with confused scrolls of enchant weapon/armor that reflection could affect floating eyes or Medusa (you can still see them)
Faulty methods I usually used when not spoiled: always left my pet behind unless I started with a polymorph wand to turn it into something tougher thought gaining levels fast as possible was good (how could you know otherwise without being spoiled?) thought throwing hand weapons did significant damage never picked up: tinning kits, gems (unless I was an archeologist), mattocks (pickaxes weigh less- didn't think of using them as weapons), T-shirts thought it was a bigger penatly for monks eating meat or using weapons didn't think there was any penalty for being a murderer or killing peaceful monsters didn't know that spellcasting made you hungry (I'd starve every healer if I lived long enough to starve)
The Late game: would take a long time to figure out how to get into the wizard's tower unless the portal happened to be in your way- even if you map the whole level that doesn't include going into corners or the few spaces at each dead end. Even when I won in wizard mode soon after getting spoiled I couldn't figure out how to get to the wizard so I wished for the Book of the Dead. If an unspoiled player had never played Zork then it would be near impossible to figure out how to open the vibrating square and very hard to figure out the bad effects of carrying or wearing the Amulet it would also be quite hard to figure out how to get to the next level from the plane of earth- finding the portal is hard enough, but an unspoiled player who's there for the first time doesn't even know what he's looking for
Estimated time it would take me to win the game unspoiled (if ever): about 7-9 years Chances of not giving up on the game before then: approximately 1 in 976 trillion
As far as I'm concerned, the game as it is now is not meant to be played unspoiled for more than 2-3 years. It's good to play awhile and try to figure out some things before getting spoiled but to me it seems your supposed to get spoiled.
Asher
Things I still can't figure out: what wisdom does when intelligence is your spellcasting attribute what happens when a magic trap makes your pack shake violently or makes you long for a distant homeland

| Maestro Doubles Glen Ashton 03:32:10 |
| | Maestro Doubles of Their 1NT Openings
If you play penalty doubles over 1NT openings, you may find that switching to Maestro Doubles can deliver you better results. It can be briefly summarized by this:
Double shows values and either a minor, both majors, or any very strong hand. In reply to double, partner will pass with 10 or more HCP, or bid a major naturally, or bid 2D to ask for a four card major, or bid 2C with none of these.
Key advantages of employing the Maestro Double are: . Far more frequent than penalty doubles. . Drives opponents out of their notrump contracts. . Enables partner with a five card or longer major to bid that major to play. . Finds 4-4 major fits (except when partner is very weak, in which case two of a minor can be an okay spot until doubled). . Shows values so partner can compete if opponents bid. . Adds definition to other bids - in particular the two level bid that shows both majors is now always distribution based, and bids showing a major and a minor, or a major and another suit, will suggest a five card or longer major.
The double is called Maestro as it is Major oriented, and was intended to be played with the Astro family of defenses, though can also be played with other notrump defenses like Cappelletti (also called Hamilton). For more details on Astro etc. see
http://www.bridgeguys.com/Conventions/Astro.html http://www.bridgeguys.com/Conventions/Aspro.html http://www.bridgeguys.com/Conventions/Asptro.html http://www.bridgeguys.com/Conventions/Cappelletti.html http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/def_1nt01.htm
The Maestro double has a strong affinity with the double of the Woolsey defense to 1NT. For more details on this defense see: http://www.gg.caltech.edu/~jeff/system/woolsey.html
Details of Maestro
The Maestro double shows:
A) 10+ HCP, five card or longer minor, good suit if just five, no singleton/void in a major unless good six card or longer suit willing to rebid on three level.
B) 12+ HCP, at least 4-4 in the majors, not balanced.
C) 17/18+ HCP, a strong hand that needs to take some action.
For hand type A it is not a 5-4-3-1 with a singleton/void in a major, as we don't want to steer the opponents to their major fit if they have one. Instead, when holding this, pass first and if they find their major fit and stop at the two level, then double for takeout. With a long minor and less than 10 HCP, either pass or jump the bidding to the three level.
For hand type B, this allows whatever two level bid over 1NT shows the majors to show either less than 12 HCP, or if good values then a distributional 5-5+ hand type.
For hand type C, doubling will often force the partner of the notrump bidder to start a run-out sequence (since will usually have a very weak hand and cannot afford the double to be passed), which will help us to determine the level and strain to play at, or allow us to double them.
Detailed responses to a Maestro Double are:
Pass: 10 or more HCP. This pass happens less frequently than one might hope for, but when it does you have the notrump hand surrounded by two good hands. The primary benefit of having this call is that it limits all the other bids, so the doubler has a good idea of what to do next.
2C: Artificial, 5-9 & no four card or longer major, or 0-4 & no six card or longer suit. Over the 2C response: Pass: 5 or longer Cs, likely as good as spot as any, up to 18. 2D: 5 or longer Ds, up to 18. 2H: Both majors, 12-18. 2S: 17/18+, 4+Ss, non-forcing. 2NT: 17/18+, not 4+Ss, non-forcing. 3C+: 19+, natural, non-forcing.
2D: Artificial, 5-9 with a four card major. Over 2D: Pass: 5 or longer Ds, no four card major, game unlikely. 2H/S: Four card or longer major, not forcing, up to mild game invitational values. If the doubler bids 2H, then 2S must be bid next if no H fit. If the doubler bids 2S, 2NT next asks for five card or longer minor. 2NT: Asking - bid your worse minor if 5-6 HCP, bid your four card major if 7-9 HCP. Over these replies, a suit bid below game is now natural & game forcing. 3C: 5 or longer Cs, no four card major, game unlikely. 3D: Both majors, game invitational values. 3H/S: Four card or longer major, good game invitational values. 4D: Both majors, game forcing.
2H/S: 0-9 with a six card or longer major, or 4-9 with a five card major. 3C/D now to play, 3 of the major is a mild game try, and 2NT is a good game try or better, forcing to 3 of the major.
2NT: Game force distributional hand. Asks partner to bid a five card minor, or best major with both majors, or 3NT if 17/18-20 and none of these. Bidding continues naturally.
3C/D: Six or longer suit, 5-9, no four card or longer major.
If the opponents redouble the Maestro double, then responses are the same. If the opponents bid directly over Maestro, then new suits are non-forcing, double shows values asking partner to describe hand but is passable if partner has length in suit doubled, and 2NT shows a hand with values that does not want to double since is short in the suit the opponents are bidding. If the Maestro doubler later doubles a second time, it is takeout if doubling a minor suit and it is penalty if doubling a major suit bid or notrump.
The Maestro Double works well with the Asptro (non-Kastro variation) convention: 2C: Hs & another, if second suit is Ss it will be a shorter or a weaker suit than Hs. 2D: Ss & another, if second suit is Hs it will be a shorter or weaker suit than Ss. 2NT: Both minors. Rest: Natural.
When Asptro is played with the Maestro Double the 2C and 2D bids will often have a five card or longer major (or a six card or longer minor that can be rebid), so partner is free to bid the major with just 3 in the suit.
This short document will be maintained and updated from time-to-time on the www.BridgeMatters.com site.

| board game mashups David W. Talmage 16:30:45 |
| | I'm looking for board game mashups, the joining of one or more board games into a single, new game. I've played and enjoyed Settlers of HeroScape, which is Settlers of Catan played on a HeroScape board with combat to determine who gets the production each turn. I found the directions on the HeroScape section of BoardGameGeek (and I posted a session report about the game). Also on BGG, I found the suggestion of making an Elfenland board out of the HeroScape tiles but that's not really a mashup, is it?
Any other mashups that you've actually played and enjoyed?

| Bunyon v0.1, Scott Adams TI99 game interpreter Stu George 09:14:09 |
| | Well, here goes... Have made bunyon v0.1 available on the IF-Archive (currently in /incoming or unprocessed)...
Lets you play TI99/4 format Scott Adams games and homebrew games made with the Adventure Editor (a scott adams format editor/compiler circa 1983/4/5? for the TI99)...
v0.1 plays Adventures 1 through 12 (which I uploaded as a separate zip file).
have not tested it on the homebrew games yet (which again, a separate zip file), which has the colossal cave version and some other stuff.
There is a WinGLK front end for those that dont like to compile, or those that do, the source supports glkterm (developed under cygwin) + winglk. should be portable enough to other glk frontends.
Theres bugs I'm sure, and the winglk front end has no bells and whistles like the glkterm version, anyway...
