Please, test new port: helixplugin Mikhail Teterin 18:16:37
 Hello!

Real's plugin does little else but launches the "realplayer" executable and
communicates with it via stdin/out.

Thus it is perfectly possible for the plugin to be compiled natively, and use
the Linux "realplay" executable -- with the natively built browser(s).

My little port

http://aldan.algebra.com/~mi/helixplugin.shar.bz2

does just that. It even seems to work, although I encountered some problems
with cbsnews.com (the first clip loads and runs, but the subsequent don't).

Would anyone, please, test it out on their favourite web-site(s)? I'd
appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

-mi

P.S. Adobe's Acrobat plugin works in the same manner -- the small plugin
invokes the acroread executable "embedded" in the browser's window.
Unfortunately, unlike Real, Adobe does not (yet?) offer the source code of
the plugin part...

An unfinish thoggen port.. (due to lacking C knowledge) Jeremy Messenger 22:54:41
 Hello folks,

Yesterday, I have created an unfinish thoggen port that have arrived to my
limit. It needs someone with C knowledge/skill to port DVD stuff on
FreeBSD.

http://people.freebsd.org/~mezz/shar/thoggen.shar

Feel free to take it and change everything such as Whom:, MAINTAINER and
etc (whatever what you like). If you don't want to maintain, but keep
MAINTAINER=multimedia@FreeBSD.org is ok with me as I will taking care of
it.

thoggen:

Thoggen is a DVD backup utility ('DVD ripper'), based on GStreamer and
Gtk+.

Media software ala DLink DSM520 ... but for FreeBSD ... ? Marc G. Fournier 19:18:45
 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

I tried the DSM320, wasn't satisfied with it, since a bunch of my videos didn't
work, and I really hated the interface (would like to be able to delete after
watching) ... so I returned it.

Is there anything I can do with a plain FreeBSD box to accomplish *at least*
what the DLink provided?

I have a box now that I can plug into my TV (S-Video with Sound Jacks), which
is what I was using before ... but, the X display on the TV is terrible, and
the interface leaves alot to be desired for my wife, so *she* won't use it ...

So ... is there any 'media software' that I can run on FreeBSD that would give
her a nice interface to work with (web based, maybe, with her using her laptop
for controls from the couch?) ...

Basically, I can't be the first one trying to do this ... anyone have any good
recommendations to make it as 'user friendly for non-unix users' as possible?

Thanks ...

FreeBSD ports that you maintain which are currently marked broken Guest 00:24:47
 Dear FreeBSD port maintainer:

As part of an ongoing effort to reduce the number of problems in the
FreeBSD ports system, we are attempting to notify maintainers of
ports that are marked as "broken" in their Makefiles. In many cases
these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD
build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions
of -CURRENT include gcc3.3, which is much stricter about such things
as function declarations, literal strings constants that continue
over several physical lines, and forcing the deprecation of antique
header files such as varargs.h (we should now be using stdargs.h).

The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386
architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more of
the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as size
of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth.

In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different
errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the
build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to
help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide.

If you need help in one or more build environments that you do not
have access to, please ask for help on the freebsd-ports mailing
list.

One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen
on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this
algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at
this kind of thing.)

The build errors are listed below. In the case where the same
problem exists on more than one build environment, the URL points
to the latest errorlog for that type. (By 'build environment'
here we mean 'combination of 4.x or 5.x, with target architecture'.)

(Note: the dates are included to help you to gauge whether or not
the build error still applies to the latest version. The program
that generates this report is not yet able to determine this
automatically.)

accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if
you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply

in the past.

Every effort has been made to make sure that these build errors
really do correspond to a port that you maintain. However, due to
the fact that this is an automated process, it may indeed generate
false matches. If one of these build errors fits that description,
please forward this email to the author of this software, Mark

Thanks for your efforts to help improve FreeBSD.

video resolution Re: FreeBSD DV howto? Dieter 14:50:57
 Losh> I have a DV camera

Your TV can probably scale it up. If not, you can run it through a
program on your computer and scale it up that way.

Losh> I know that DV is 640x480

Casavant> I believe NTSC DV is 720x480

Losh> I'd be happy with 720p. However, 720p is 1280x720. 480[ip] are 640x480.

Do not confuse 720x480 with 720p. Do not assume that video has square pixels.

NTSC DV is 720x480
DVD is 720x480
ATSC 480i is 528x480 or 544x480 or 704x480 (perhaps others, but I have yet to find
any station broadcasting 640x480 or 720x480)
NTSC after being A/D-ed by a tuner card is 640x480 (perhaps others)

FreeBSD DV howto? M. Warner Losh 00:09:20
 Greetings,

I'm wondering if anybody has a FreeBSD DV how-to. I have a DV
camera and a AMD64 FreeBSD laptop. I'd like to harvest the pictures
from it to (a) archive it in DV25 mode and (b) process it to create a
DVD. My son's hockey team needs a videographer for the year and I was
hoping to use a DV camera for all of this...

It would also be nice 'play' the video on my HDTV that supports
1080p. I know that DV is 640x480, but that's better than normal NTS,
right?

So I was wondering if there's a good FreeBSD DV how-to somewhere.

I've found dvrecv, which works well. And kino, which gives me a bus
error. Anything else?

Disabling ACPI, the soundcard works flawlessly.

I'll ask freebsd-acpi.

New port: pvrxxx for Hauppauge PVR150/500 Guest 15:58:26
 Dear List,

i just want to make people aware that now there is a driver for the
Hauppauge PVR150 and PVR500 cards ( multimedia/pvrxxx ).

it is based on the pvr250 port and some linuxtv.org code.

features and missing features:
- stable
- supports more than 1 card in a single machine
- runs on 4.x, 5.x, 6.x
- partial v4l(2) interface, currently only tested with MythTV 0.18-fixes
- tuner input and composite input
- no radio support yet
- no ir support yet

i am currently working on vbi support. if someone has a pvr250 and a
pvr150/500, i would be interested in making this driver support
150+250+500. it should not be too hard.

any feedback is welcome.

regards,

usleepless

PS: the maintainers email-address in the Makefile should read
"usleepless@gmail.com".

work on Dell I1300?
You should have at least 3 my verbose dmesgs. If not, I can send you
one more copy.

I've just loaded the most recent binary modules (dated October, 12th):
pcm0: <Intel 82801F High Definition Audio Controller> mem
0xdfebc000-0xdfebffff irq 16 at device 27.0 on pci0
pcm0: <HDA Codec: Sigmatel STAC9220>
pcm0: <HDA Driver Revision: 20061013_0032>

Still no traces of device "mic" in mixer.

Are you in the mood to track this down?

Check out /usr/ports/UPDATING , you need to upgrade a
special way.

Help with snd_hda Prof. Jo o Henrique G. Borges 19:13:11
 Hi all,
I have a Acer Aspire 1640Z notebook.
In last 4 days I've used my soundcard due to big job done by Mr. Ariff
Abdullah.
Trying to make my DVD recorder to work, I'd recompile my FreeBSD 6.1 kernel.
Mute, my notebook is mute with the following message error on trying to load
snd_hda.ko: "link_elf: symbol mix_setparentchild undefined".
Searchs in Google returned not a useful information.

Please, can anybody give a tip to solve this question?

Thank you,
Joao Henrique

ATSC tuners (was: Re: New port: pvrxxx for Hauppauge PVR150/500) Dieter 16:39:53

The only supported ATSC tuner that I know about is the DViCO FusionHDTV5> Lite that I wrote a driver for...

Last I read, you were still having problems, glad to hear it is considered
supported now!
(It is/was the least expensive at ~$90)

Zipzoomfly is selling the Artec T14A for US$59.99 including "free" shipping.
It is a USB device rather than PCI.
