| Web Cam Monitor Solution: Expert Advice Needed! Fitzwilliam Darcy 19:39:20 |
| | I would like to remotely monitor my ailing mother in her home using three web cams. This will allow me and my brothers to check on her periodically throughout the day.
I really need a cost effective solution for this.
I think we need:
a. 3 web cams (for placement around the house) b. a computer connected to a cable modem c. a router to connect computers and web cams
Wireless would be the best bet I imagine? Can someone recommend brands and the rest of the components we need? What software would broadcast the images on to the web for us to access?
Simple and inexpensive would be wonderful.
Thank you!
p.s. optionally, it would be great if we could hear her or even be able to talk to her voice but this is not a requirement.

| ATI HDTV Wonder card can capture HDTV pictures in 1080i or 1080p and print out as photos? Guest 19:02:57 |
| | seems like the ATI Wonder HDTV card for PC can capture photos in 1080i? so in fact we can capture nice pictures of scenery or some world cup soccer snapshots from HDTV and then send it to shutterfly or yahoo photo to print it out in 4 x 6 photos. with the resolution of 1920 x 1080, it probably will print out quite nicely... just except that unless there is interlace problem.

| Re: USDTV in Bankruptcy...full article Weekend Guru 19:33:57 |
| | If you have trouble with the link...here's the article:
USDTV Files for Bankruptcy By Mike Farrell, STAFF (Multichannel News) _ Fledgling wireless-cable-television-service provider U.S. Digital Television, which offered 30 channels of basic-cable TV for just $19.95 per month, threw in the towel last week, filing for Chapter 7 liquidation bankruptcy.
USDTV, based in Draper, Utah, used digital-broadcast spectrum to beam its signals to homes in Dallas; Salt Lake City; Albuquerque, N.M..; and Las Vegas. The company has said that it has about 16,000 subscribers.
USDTV targeted "cable-never" homes -- consumers who had never had cable or satellite television -- and cable or direct-broadcast satellite subscribers upset over paying for channels they never watched.
The company leased digital spectrum from television stations in the markets it targeted and sold the service through Wal-Mart Stores locations, select dealers and via the Internet and telephone orders. According to its Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition, filed July 6 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, USDTV listed estimated assets of $1 million-$10 million and estimated debts of $10 million-$50 million.
A Chapter 7 bankruptcy is essentially a liquidation. Unlike a Chapter 11 bankruptcy -- which keeps creditors off the bankrupt company's back as it assembles a reorganization plan -- a Chapter 7 liquidation is usually an orderly sale of all of a company's assets.
According to TVNewsday.com (www.tvnewsday.com), USDTV CEO Steve Lindsley said the company is in discussions to possibly sell the assets to a third-party investment group. Although he would not name that group, he said USDTV is still providing service and is in discussions with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Trustee to continue to provide service in order to help facilitate a sale.
USDTV has struggled since its inception in 2003, but in 2005, it got a much-needed capital infusion when a handful of TV-station groups -- Fox Television Group, Hearst-Argyle Television, LIN TV, McGraw-Hill Broadcasting, Morgan Murphy Stations and Telecom DTV -- agreed to invest a combined $26 million in the company.

| PowerPoint at start of home-movie Frank 10:04:46 |
| | I've did a 6 slide presentation using PowerPoint and I intend to use it as a logo at the start of all my kid's home-movies. When you perform the slides as a slide show it's quite a good logo effect.
The problem I've got is how to gain access to the motion so that I can place it in front of all the movies after I've edited them and prior to burning back to DVD.
Hoping there's someone out there that can help me.
Yours,
Frank.

| ATI Wonder can capture 1080i or 1080p? Guest 00:19:02 |
| | so the world cup just ended... and i forgot i could have installed the ATI HDTV Wonder and then capture some photos from the program... or is the image strictly done on the overlay and cannot be captured? I wonder if the capture is done in 1080i, then there might be some interlace... otherwise, 720p is already quite good.
(surprised to find out my local ABC broadcast of the world cup is 720p, while my comcast cable will show ABC's world cup in 1080i)
for some video files, seems like i can just set the "overlap" to off, and then press PrintScreen (PrtScn) on the keyboard and then the image will be captured. Also, if the overlay cannot be turned off, I can start another player such as Windows Media player and set it to use the overlay first, and run the other video player. Since the graphics card only has one overlay, the second player is forced to use the non-overlay display and therefore will let the PrintScreen button work.

What case do you use for your S80, bearing in mind I really would like a Lowepro case again?
Thanks in advance.

| Why ZLR? Talal Itani 23:14:19 |
| | I am in the market for a digital camera, to be used for close-up still shots. In general, does a ZLR produce better pictures than an P&S? Are the optics better in a ZLR? Is the sensor better? I understand that ZLRs can do much zooming, something I do not need, I will use the camera only in the macro mode. Please let me know the merits of a ZLR over a P&S. Thank you.

| Casio EX-Z500 problem with USB2.0 ?? Andrew 22:45:57 |
| | I recently bought an EX-Z500 and what a great little camera. But it will NOT download the pictures at USB2.0. It only works very slow (about USB1.1 rates) with the provided cradle. Everything else on the PC works fine through USB2.0, i have tried other USB2.0 ports and still cannot get it to work at USB2.0. I e-mailes Casio help and they didn't know what it was and said to send them the camera back (which i refuse to do since it's only 3 days old !!). I have even tried a different USB cable with no joy.
The rates at which it downloads at is about 0.9mb / second, my other cameras download at 3 to 4 mb / sec and considering the card in this camera is a 2Gb card, it takes a heck of a long time to download !!
Please help ! - Any ideas what i could do here ??
I am using Win XP Pro (SP1), 720RAM, 1.8GHz.

| | Yup...a VERY old light meter. I need a case for it. The case that came with it is evidently for an older model as it lack the little 'door' in back so the light-sensing element can 'see'.
Does any one have an idea where I can get the right case for a Weston Master V meter?

| public outdoor webcams Mitcheroo 13:11:22 |
| | Just how big a "thing" on the 'net are outdoor webcams? (Especially "PTZ" cams?)
There are a number of webcams I visit regularly. It's like a kind of tourism-by-remote. The high-resolution PTZ cams are of course the best, but those are few and far between. Livewave had for a few years an incredible installation atop the Hyatt in Newport, R.I., by the Narragansett, but public web access was removed a couple of years ago.
I wonder about the commercial possibilities of web access to good-quality PTZ viewing. I also understand that there are serious privacy issues.

| storage ideas? Roscoe James 09:37:32 |
| | I have a Nikon D50 which I love and a Lexar 1.0 gig 133X memory card. I am going on a three week vacation during which I'll be taking many pictures. I was going to get a few more memory cards but even though the price of memory has dropped I am still thinking of something along the lines of a 30 gig Ipod by Apple or a Gigabeat by Toshiba. That way I can store my pictures and also use it as a mp3 player. Any thoughts or suggestions regarding these units or any others like Creative, etc. or even digital wallets that are meant only for picture storage?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

| Inexpensive camera Bob L 00:51:59 |
| | My wife wants an inexpensive, easy-to-use, digital camera. In Best Buy I've looked at the Fuji A400 and the Kodak C330 which each sells for $129. I'm leaning toward the Kodak as it looks to be the easiest to use.
Any comments on which camera is best between these two?

| ATI Wonder can record 1080i or 1080p? Guest 23:40:05 |
| | For the ATI All in Wonder HDTV card for PC, some reviewers claim that you can record the HDTV, but only in 720 or 480 lines of resolution? I wonder if someone has the card and can record HDTV in 1080 resolution? When it is recorded, is the file in .mpg format (mpeg2)?
