| Suggestions for a digital camera Anna 23:44:57 |
| | I recently bought a Canon SD300 Elph due to it's good ratings, but find it isn't really suitable for my needs. I find that it doesn't have enough optical zoom.
I'm looking for a new camera and was hoping someone could provide some suggestions based on personal experience.
What I would prefer is 4-5 megapixel with a high optical zoom. I don't need alot of manual settings, I prefer the automatic point and shoot variety.
Thank you
Anna

| Motorola L6 - Video Capability John Curtiss 17:49:17 |
| | I have just been playing around with the video on this camera. Same question... different day.... anyone know how to transfer these files to the PC without emailing each one? Cingular is being very secretive about this -- not much help -- and Motorola the same. Very strange for companies to try and sell you something then intentionally avoid giving you basic tech support.
Although I like this phone for my basic purpose (calling people), I would not be able to give Motorola or Cingular a very good rating on tech support for this model.

The Toshiba IK-WB11A Wireless Webcam runs embedded Linux, and the> application software is Java based. But it's buggy, and I'd like see if I can improve it. Without shell access, I'm not sure how to about modifying the Java code. Is it likely there is a shell> available?> It's not likely.> Not even with 2MB of firmware?
Have you any idea of what type of CPU the IK-WB11A uses? Which Linux release? Perhaps a shell binary could be compiled for it, and uploaded to firmware.
In case you have success, I have a list of wishes > What sort of wishes?
Probably you have to tear it apart and read the flash ROM. Normally "firmware update" file, that is available, should contain everything you> need. It is not encrypted and there is a lot of HTML code clearly readable.> Yes. I discovered that. Thanks.
One of the main problems I'm having is FTP unable to send file errors. I'm not sure if that's a result of a weak signal on the wireless link, timeout parameters too short, or what.
The other problem I'm having is easy to see on the Java Console; after a minute or so, it stops sending '__live.jpg' files to update the display. I'm wondering if there's a way to send it some command to restart that.
The rest looks rather binary with a long table in the start block.> I'm thinking the binary looking stuff is compiled kernel and other binary files.
Maybe you have to dissect this and in case you are wrong with your hope that> this could be Java P-Code, you certainly have to use a disassembler
the specific CPU type used.> It could be troublesome finding such a disassembler.
I've been snooping in the firmware, and located a few interesting things. Below is a table of file names. Of course, all the http code is there in ASCII, so it may be easy to modify much of the firmware if one has the courage to attempt to flash the ROM with the modified firmware. I wonder if the firmware update file contains a checksum?
Have you any idea what the 'recovery' function does? It's not documented in the Advanced User Guide nor the SDK* documentation. It uses the same administrator ID/PW, and provides the opportunity to name a local file ostensibly to contain the recovery data (whatever that might be).
At the end of the list below are some interesting strings that provide a clue into possibly useful things. In particular:
TxVGCWireless Transmit Variable Gain Control? Low_GainWireless Gain Control? High_GainWireless Gain Control? Current(3sec)May be useful to overcome timeouts Receive(1sec)May be useful to overcome timeouts
Please use RS-232C !!!This is particularly interesting. I wonder which jack is for serial communications?
Perhaps one could get a shell prompt over RS-232C?
Have you been successful in getting the 'getstream.cgi' function syntax correct? I made a quick attempt, but it failed.
That's all for now. More as time permits.

| Home Monitoring Mike B. 00:51:15 |
| | I recently moved into a new first floor apartment. While the neighborhood seems safe enough, I grew up in the Bronx, so the need for home protection is always in the back of my mind. So, I looked online and found a home monitoring system called Homesight on www.xanboo.com/homesight.
I bought it at the radioshack near my apartment in Jersey City and have never been happier. To begin with, electronics and I are not friends, so the fact that within 10-15 minutes, I had the system set up and that is with reading instructions (that tells you how comfortable with electronics I am). The best part is the features. I can now watch what is going on in my home through live video on my cell phone. It has a cool remote service feature that allows you to watch from any PC, plus the other devices they have in the line are optional, you can create the perfect home monitoring solution. I bought an extra camera to watch my door, and a wireless siren. The system is fairly cheap, it only costs $99.99 and it comes with a camera, a door/window sensor, a gateway, and an installation CD.
I finally have peace of mind while I am at work.

| Which is best driver for DV camcorder as webcam? Ferrymanr 22:36:27 |
| | I have found two drivers that allow me to use my DV camcorder via firewire as a webcam. DVdriver from trackercam and WebCamDV. Trackercam do a free alternative that works but not very well and really hogs the processor. DVdriver and WebCamDV (time limited trial versions) seem less of a load with DVdriver having a good digital zoom. Both are shareware at around $20. Before I look at purchasing can anyone comment on these or any alternatives. Thanks Richard

| Night Vision Webcam with 6 LED's Guest 02:06:15 |
| | I posted something in this NG a few weeks ago regarding a night vision webcam. I got one, dirt cheap, and installed it and everything. NOW, how do i switch on night vision? Does it switch into "night vision" mode when the room is dark?
I would assume having night vision would be better than your average webcam, since the LED's would provide more lighting. I have a few regular webcams that do NOT work well in low-lighting, especially the GE webcam pro by Jasco.

| Just got a free digital camera.... Impmon 22:42:53 |
| | Got to love being on a mailing list when you dont want to be in the first place. I recieved a box from Winston but since I've never been a smoker so no idea why I got on their list in the first place. Inside the box was a free cheap 100k pix camera (352x288 max) No visible brand name and Windows IDs it as dual camera but no names offered. Takes a pitful 16 shots of HQ pics before its internal memory is full and no external memory card slot.
Probably something I'd leave in the glove box in my car in case something interesting happens and I dont have my usual camera. -- When you hear the toilet flush, and hear the words "uh oh", it's already too late. - by anonymous Mother in Austin, TX Spam block in place, no emil reply is expected at all.

| Webcam refresh on webpage not sync EsDee 18:55:55 |
| | Hi,
I am running these webcams: http://www.ulv.nl/webcam/
The server is uploading a new image every 2 seconds, the browser is refreshing every 2 seconds. So, I would think that they keep running in sync. Now, every once in a while, one of the pictures is refreshing, but shows only a red cross in the upper-left corner. Seems that the requested picture is not complete when the browser wants to get it.
Is there a way (especially an easy one around this?
Thenks in advance,

| D-Link AC Adapter Bill 07:54:16 |
| | Hi all,
I've been looking (with no success) for a replacement adapter for my wireless D-Link DCS-900W. It happens to be the same adapter they use with the DI-524. It's the model # JTA0302B. Output: +5.0V / 2.5A (positive polarity)
There's nothing on Ebay (there had been, but it's gone) and nearly every link done through a Google search refers to an adapter at a LaptopsForLess site that: 1) doesn't list the correct specs, 2) has a different number, and 3) even looks different.
Maybe someone out there can point me towards one???
Thanks for any help!!!

| Do I need more than the cheapest? Josh 03:15:28 |
| | Building a computer for a friend, and he wants a new webcam also. (He's been using his old analog camcorder). I've never had a webcam, so I'm not up to date on those. I was looking probably at the logitech quickcam Pro 5000 or the Logitech 961410-0403 QuickCam Communicate STX.
He will only be using this webcam (or so he says for Yahoo Messenger, so I'm wondering if I only need the cheapest webcam? Like I said, I haven't used webcams before, but I assume which software cam is bundled with is immaterial, since he'll be using Yahoo. Also, will 640x480 and/or higher resolution be wasted $$$$ because of only using Yahoo?
Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks, Josh

| Can anyone read out the colour settings for a Samsung 403T ? Mike 07:01:25 |
| | Hi chaps,
I nobbled the colour settings on a Samsung 403T and wonder if someone can go into service mode (LCD off, then "Mute" "1" "8" "2" on remote) and read them out, but whatever you do *dont* ever do autocolor as there is no going back to the white balance/white gain levels - <guh> !!
There are a pair of settings for each, gain and offset in two separate menus, so quite a few and probably worth you taking a backup anyway <shrug>

| Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000 - Beware! Karen McDonald 02:18:34 |
| | Intending purchasers of this Logitech camera may like to know that two friends and I, who already have one each, are disappointed at the unit's inability to record video files that are properly in sync. At the start of each recording the video and sound are adrift by several frames and, as the seconds tick by, this only gets worse.
All of us are using the latest Intel Core Duo PCs with 1Gb RAM sticks and connecting our cameras via USB 2.0. So the problem is a mystery.
On the upside, Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000 has great sound, takes astounding stills and is very well-priced. The video is good too - just not properly synchronised with the sound. Which is very off-putting.
So I would ask for a demo of this webcam before buying it.
Wish we had.

| Logitech Quickcam pro 5000 - Audio problems - issues - fast playback Rico 20:14:45 |
| | Hi everyone,
I have always benefited form forums like this so I will give back. Bought the same camera about a week ago. Nice camera. The video has always been fine. It's the audio that causes problems. First, my clips were "accelerated." a 20 second clip would playback in 5 seconds! (weird, voice distorted). Solution? Uninstalled and re-installed the whole thing, rebooted and now videos play normal lenght... BUT a "hmmm (noise)" in the background remained... Solution, after lots of trial and error, found out some devices do not work well on USB HUBS!... moved my usb headset to one of my motherboard's USB ports... voila! video ok, audio ok, no noise.
Moved back my heaset (speakers and mic) from the PC to the HUB!...made a video, same problem again: accelerated videos, funny voice. So BEWARE of USB ports... that is my conclusion. Funny little noises in the background can be cured simply by unplugging and plugging back the usb connector and of course, reboot...reboot.. reboot. Good luck

| Logitech Quickcam pro 5000 sound video sync problem Smarc1214 07:46:44 |
| | I bought a logitech quickcam pro 5000 for work to use for digital video training. The sessions are an hour in length and the camera was to be used to digitally store the session on a hard drive. When I start the camera at 320x200 everything seems fine. But by ten minutes my voice and the video are three seconds apart. The video lags behind the sound at this rate. By 20 minutes its about 5 seconds off. This makes the camera useless. I called Logitech and tried a clean boot, running the camer on three computers, and did some reg edits to reload the USB 2.0 drivers. I've tried using differnt USB 2.0 ports on the computer I am running on a 3.4ghz Intel machine with1gb memory. Its a new machine. I am completely stumped as are the Logitech folks. Has anyone heard of this? If I can get this to work I will get lots of these cameras, but as it is now they wiould be useless.
