| memory for core 2 duo (warning, newb) Gimp 22:51:53 |
| | i'm doing a new system build in 2 weeks, it will be a core 2 duo E6600, yep i've been seduced by the dark side. but it will be really useful as a 3d workstation. my OC'd X2 4200+ will have its graphics ripped out and be re-assigned render-node status. heh kinda sad.
for mobo i was thinking an asus P5N32-SLI Deluxe, not too sure but i want to go with a good brand. i havn't built an intel rig in 5+ years, so have no clue what ram to buy... it will initially not be OC'd so just generic DDR2 would be ok, but there are different speeds of DDR2, are there issues with timing that mean i should get a specific speed..?

| Wall Street Journal & Rahul Sood: ATI & AMD a done deal Yousuf Khan 15:43:30 |
| | The Wall Street Journal is stating that the deal is now a done deal. The WSJ link below is a registration site, so I'll just quote it below the link. The Rahul Sood blog link is free, I'll just post the link with just a single quote.
I'm not so sure this is such a good thing to have happened. I guess we'll only know in a few years I guess.
Yousuf Khan
Rahul Sood's Blog: "I am busting at the seams here, I have been holding my opinions on this potential ATi + AMD deal for many months now. Obviously everyone knows Intel??™s latest product offering is excellent and news on Conroe/Woodcrest is humming along ??“ but this deal with ATi + AMD has positive cataclysmic effects on the entire industry. This deal slightly overshadows any news going on in our industry at the moment." http://voodoopc.blogspot.com/2006/07/amd-ati-one-one-three.html
WSJ: AMD Will Pay $5.4 Billion To Purchase ATI Technologies http://us.rd.yahoo.com/finance/external/wsj/SIG=11phl6dfo/*http://online.wsj.com/article/SB115368512442514775.html?mod=yahoo_hs&ru=yahoo
By DON CLARK and DENNIS BERMAN> July 23, 2006 4:16 p.m.> SAN FRANCISCO -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. plans to pay about $5.4 billion to buy ATI Technologies Inc., people familiar with the matter said, in what would be one of the biggest-ever acquisitions of a semiconductor maker.> The companies were in late stages of negotiations Sunday, with a deal likely to be announced as early as Monday morning, these people said. ATI had a market capitalization of about $4.2 billion as of Friday. The consideration from AMD is expected to be mostly in cash, with the remainder comprised of AMD shares, these people said.> The long-rumored deal, if completed, could transform AMD's long-running battle with Intel Corp., the No. 1 supplier of the microprocessors that serve as electronic brains in personal computers. ATI, based in Markham, Ontario, is best known for another category of chips that handle PC graphics, a market where it competes fiercely with Nvidia Corp.> Significantly, ATI also makes another category of accessory products called chip sets, which carry out functions such as fetching data from memory and sometimes come with built-in graphics. Intel has an even bigger business in chip sets, and has used that capability effectively against AMD.> Intel's strategy has been particularly potent in laptop computers, where the company has used the combination of microprocessors and chip sets to offer such benefits as lower power consumption. AMD, with ATI's help, could match and possibly surpass Intel's ability to offer computer makers such integrated "platforms" of technology, said Jon Peddie, a market researcher in Tiburon, Calif.> Rahul Sood, president of the gaming computer company VoodooPC, argued in a blog over the weekend that ATI is a "diamond hidden deep in the rough." The proposed deal would be a brilliant stroke for AMD, he argued, representing "a go-big strategy that will shake the very foundation of our industry."> The transaction is considered controversial, however. That's partly because AMD has generally enjoyed benefits from being a neutral partner for both ATI and Nvidia, particularly in the market for high-performance PCs favored by game enthusiasts.> AMD needs Nvidia's continued support in selling chip sets and graphics chip that exploit AMD's microprocessors, and so would have to be even-handed in sharing information with Nvidia as well as an ATI subsidiary.> Another possible concern is ATI's track record. The company last year ran into delays in launching its latest high-performance graphics chip, allowing Nvidia to boost its market share. In late June, ATI issued a sales forecast that fell short of analysts' expectations, triggering a sharp drop in its stock price.> AMD also has been separately spending heavily on boosting its manufacturing capacity. The company, which had about $2.5 billion in cash and short-term investments at the end of June, would likely have to take on debt to finance the ATI transaction, further stretching its financial resources at a time when its share price has been under pressure because of competition from Intel.> AMD, of Sunnyvale, Calif., on Thursday reported a 53% jump in second-quarter revenue, but acknowledged that sales would have been even higher if pricing pressure from Intel had not been so severe. In response, the company's stock sunk 15.6% Friday to trade at 4 p.m at $18.26, off $3.39, on the New York Stock Exchange.> Several news outlets carried reports of a potential deal between AMD and ATI Friday, including the Inquirer -- a Web trade publication -- the Toronto Globe and Mail and Bloomberg. ATI shares rose 83 cents, or 5.3%, to $16.56 at 4 p.m. on Nasdaq.> Write to Don Clark at don.clark@wsj.com and Dennis Berman at dennis.berman@wsj.com

Dude, your Dell just freaking blew up!!! http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/Dude-Dell-freaking-blew-ftopict192887.html

| Few questions regarding a new system.. Chingy 16:37:41 |
| | Hey all
I am in process of building a new system for me, mainly for gaming currently I play WoW, Halo, Titan quest etc.
I have a P4 2gig CPU with 2 gig RAM for 2 yrs now so its sorta aging thats what I feel anyway.
I read on System components website, AMD new AM2 x2 core CPU what are they?
Should I go for Intel or AMD, bear in mind I don't play too graphically intense games but I do still want something in between Mid to highend gaming machine, mid is fine as long as it does 2 yrs fine for me then I can upgrade again..
So, Dual core SMP processing benefits only to those applications that built to use that technology, I don't see many new games uses such SMP x2 processor technology but will they in lets say 1 yr or so?
So what should I choose Higher cycle 1x cpu or 2x core slower cycle cpu.
Cheers

| Core 2 Duo Performance Bards1888 12:45:45 |
| | Well, the reviews have started to arrive, it looks like even the 'slower' E6600 (2.4 ghz 4mb cache) is similar in performance to the FX-62. What will AMD do now, give the huge price performace disparity ?
Even if they dropped the price on the FX-62 to match the E6600 I wouldn't buy one.
Great news for the consumer.
Will be interesting to see how the conroe shapes up in 64bit mode.

| Athlon 64 CPU temp Keith Langer 09:42:38 |
| | Hi,
I just built a system with an Athlon 64 3500+ socket AM2 (ECS C51GM-M 1.0 motherboard), and I'm finding that the CPU temp is running very high under heavy loads. I have cool n quiet enabled, and under no load the CPU temp is about 46C and the case is about 40C. The ACPI temp seems to run hotter the longer it's on, and right now it's 54C. HD is 38C When I run the CPU under a heavy load, the temp can jump up to 70C, with the case staying around 42C. It doesn't seem to make much of a difference if I open the side of the case. Room temp is ~18C.
I am using the AMD heatsink and fan from the retail box. Initially I mistakenly put thermal grease on the CPU even though there was a thermal pad on the heat sink. After having temperature problems, I removed the heatsink, cleaned heatsink and CPU with isopropyl alcohol, and put arctic silver 5 on (size about 3/4 of a BB just like arctic silver recommends). Tried movinaag heatsink slightly after install to remove bubbles. Reclamped heatsink. Same temp problems!
So now I'm particularly concerned about the CPU temp under heavy loads, and the power supply temp under normal circumstances. The CPU fan is running at about 2800 rpm, and the case fan is also running. The heat sink never feels particularly warm, which makes me think that there's still poor thermal conductivity. Is the AMD cooling solution just lousy? Can someone make some recommendations as to how to decrease these temperatures?
Can you guys tell me what temperatures you get under no load and under heavy loads? Can you also tell me what you're using to cool it? I've read some of the previous posts, and the tips haven't gotten me anywhere.
thanks, Keith

| Max CPU Neil Barras 06:01:28 |
| | Hey all,
I'm looking at buying an IBM NetVista M41 Type 6792, and was wondering what the maximum CPU was? The ones I have been looking at have either 1.6 or 1.8 P4s, running with a 400fsb on the 845 chipset. I would like to be able to get a faster cpu in, preferrably 2.4GHz or above?
Thanks,

Green standby light comes on on MOBO but not boot up, fans on Processor, and PS do not come on.Now have 6600 replacement from BFG but i beleive there is another problem somewhere and do not want to fry the new card. | new AMD chip to compete with Conroe? Nick 18:47:06 |
| | I'm an AMD loyalist, have been for years and I'm wondering what AMD plans on doing to compete with intels new core 2 duo (conroe). My biggest complaint about AMD lately has been them asking too much for their dual core chips compaired to intel. I was building a server for work about a month ago and I had to bite the bullet and build an intel pentium D 930 rig. it was the first intel computer I've ever built (and I've been building computer for 10 years, all AMD's) but the price point and overclockability was too much to pass up. so my question is, whats AMD doing to regain it's crown. I heard about them pushing up the 45nm chips to early 2008. but is that it? are they going to sit back for a year and a half and let intel beat them?
