| need help with BIOS update Herman 04:06:19 |
| | I want to update a BIOS chip in an old motherboard, but I find I have an option for a 1Mb chip or a 2Mb chip. I don't know how to tell if my chip is 1 or 2Mb, and if I flash it with the wrong size my board will be dead.
The board is a Lucky Star 6ABX2V - manufacturer no longer exists as a hardware manufacturer.
These are the details given by the BIOS ident utility from www.esupport.com -
BIOS Date: 08/21/98 BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG BIOS ID: 08/21/1998-i440BX-W977TF-2A69KL1AC OEM Sign-On: #AD3-05 Chipset: Intel 440BX/ZX rev 2 Superio: Winbond 977TF rev 0 found at port 3F0h OS: Win98 CPU: Pentium?® II (0.25 ?µm) 400 MHz BIOS ROM In Socket: Unknown BIOS ROM Size: Unknown Memory Installed: 319 MB Memory Maximum: Unknown
As you can see the identification utility can't determine the ROM size either.
The reason I want to try to update this BIOS is because since this machine was updated from Windows 98 fisrt edition to Windows 98 Second Edition it has been impossible to shut down the computer - it just hangs with a blank screen and blinking cursor before it gets to the "Windows is shutting down" screen. The computer will only shutdown correctly if I start Windows in safe mode.
I have exhausted all other hardware/software update avenues, and BIOS update is only option left I haven't tried.
Windows Update has been run and everything is current. All add-in PCI cards have had their drivers updated to the current version. These cards are Dlink DWL-G510 wireless card, Silicon Image Sil 0680 Ultra-133 Medley ATA Raid card, Creative Sound Blaster PCI64, and a 32Mb nVidia Riva TNT2 model 64. The chipset drivers for the motherboard are updated and current.
I'm hoping that upgrading the BIOS will fix the shutdown problem as I have run out of other things to try - unless someone has any other ideas?

| New system will not post Beoweolf 17:56:47 |
| | I decided to update my Intel 1.6cpu...it is,was the last Intel box in my network. Decided to update to AMD2 socket, DDR, 3800+... Thent he fun began!
All the M/B required PCI express card, Ka-ching, Next, all the boards requried DDR2,Ka-ching, Ka-ching. None of the "inexpensive" boards had more than 2 IDE slots, so new M/B, Ka-ching, Ka-ching, Ka-ching! Format doesn't fit the old case... OK, bottom line, I have a new system, new case, New power supply (old 20 pin is not replaced with New 24 pin, ....just in case).
System will not post no matter what. The system is on a KVM, so that is my next magical trick, to see if it will boot/post with old tech CRT, Keyboard and wired mouse.
symptom: everything spins up, no video display (using either on-board video or PCI-e card, check memory and re-seated it several times...beep at start-up can be either memory not recognised or Video not being recognise.
I did try a SATA drive as well as the previous drives from the old system (WD caviar's 40Gb - 2001 and 2003...they are still running strong since 2001 and 2003 on the second). I have stripped everything not totally necessary for boot up, still no post and that same damned, mocking beep. new case is Antec, new M/B is Gigabyte.
Any diagnostic help will be appreciated.

| AMD might indeed be considering open-sourcing ATI drivers Yousuf Khan 14:17:28 |
| | Just as we've been discussing in other threads about whether AMD would open-source the ATI drivers, it looks like it will. It looks like they're talking about a "functional subset" of the ATI drivers, which probably means all of the game cheats are being exorcised before release into the OS community.
Yousuf Khan
"Lastly, and remember you heard it here, AMD is strongly considering open-sourcing at least a functional subset of ATI??™s graphics drivers. It??™s time for X Window System, OpenGL, and client virtualization for which ATI binary drivers aren??™t available to escape the ghetto of the 1980s-era framebuffer. And what a boon for PR. If AMD??™s graphics cards were the only ones with open device drivers, it might affect a buying decision or two." http://www.infoworld.com/article/06/08/02/32OPcurve_1.html

| AMD's marketshare did still manage to go up Bbbl67 06:58:24 |
| | Despite the onset of the major price war, and Intel sabotaging its own sales and inventory levels, along with those of AMD's by pre-hyping the Core 2 processors, AMD still managed to get a 1% point increase in marketshare in this past quarter. That's according to Mercury Research. There are other research firms that will report later too, which will have their own data.

Okay, be that as it may, if reporters are taking liberties with their stories, then do you have an explanation for this story?
PC World PC World's Techlog http://blogs.pcworld.com/techlog/archives/002494.html
PC World's Harry McCracken:> "For me, though, the most memorable moment of the morning was a completely unexpected one. The event kicked off with a speech by Intel CEO Paul Ottelini in which he talked, among other things, about the era in which the CPU wars were about clockspeed. To make his point, he had a slide in which he showed covers of old computer magazines, going all the way back to the days when a 90-MHz machine was a hot rod.> Here's the slide (which is a bit fuzzy because it's a still from a video I shot with my little Canon Elph)> I wasn't surprised by the old covers, since we'd given Intel some images of old PCWs to help them out. But I was startled, to say the least, by that PC World on the far right, showing the January, 2003 issue with its great big "First 3-GHz PCs for 2003" line.> How come I was flummoxed by a PCW cover? Well, we never did that one. Here's the real January, 2003 issue, which did mention 3-Ghz PCs, but as a text-only line above our logo." Sounds like liberties with the truth are being taken all around here, doesn't it?

| Pentium 965EE multiplier x16 Wolfgang 04:24:45 |
| | Hello,
I bought a pentium 965EE 3733Ghz/1066FSB CPU for an ASUS P5N32 SLI deluxe mainboard with 0310 bios. In the bios is the option to set the multiplier from x12 min. to x60 max. also in everest and sandra shows the same option. I was aghast to see, that the multiplier can be changed, but doesn't make effect when I save the change in bios. When the multiplier is set to x16, the CPU should run with 4300Mhz, but it still shows 3733Mhz.
Does some body know this CPU and the possibility to change the multiplier? Intel doesn't respond, ASUS doesn't know, some people say this, some people say that... Is there some body who really knows about
this stuff?
Thanks for answering, regards, Wolfgang

| Odd Temperatures With X2 4200 Peter van der Goes 19:21:28 |
| | I just replaced my A64 3200 Venice (running at 2.5 GHz) with an X2 4200. The 3200 idled at 32-34C and would go up to 42C at full load.
For reference, case temperature = 27C in a 25C room. Temps apply to all PC's and CPU's mentioned. Stock HSF on all CPU's.
The X2 4200 idles at 46C at stock speed, and at 48C overclocked to 2.64 GHz. But, even after running Prime 95 for three hours, The temperature never exceeded 53C.
The HSF that came with the X2 appears identical to the HSF that came with the 3200. Plain aluminum block.
Oddly, I have an X2 3800 in another PC that idles at 38C and never exceeds 44C with stock HSF (looks the same as the other two).
The X2 4200 I got is the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Manchester 2000MHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model ADA4200BVBOX - Retail from Newegg, if that helps.
I guess my questions are:
Why the high idle temp? (I suspect aluminum HSF about maxed out). Given the top loaded temp, I don't see any danger, but:
Suggestions for a better HSF that won't cost an arm and a leg?
Thanks.

| Athlon 64 3000+ RAM issues Htnakirs@Gmail.Com 11:08:56 |
| | Config : Athlon 64 3000+ Venice, ASROCK 939NF4G-SATA2 (Nforce 6100+410 chipset), 256 MB X 2 DDR 400.
CPU Z shows under the memory tab : DRAM Frequency value 129 CPU: DRAM value CPU/14.
SPD tab shows the max bandwidth as 200 MHz.
Setting the RAM frequency at Auto in the BIOS shows DDR 333 at boot up. Since the 3000+ runs at 1800 with the multiplier of 9 and HT frequency at 200, the DRAM frequency works out to 1800/14 = 129. Setting the RAM to 400 in the BIOS does not change this value. If overclocked by increasing HT frequency, the CPU and RAM speeds correspondingly increase. To run the RAM at its rated speed, I need to OC the CPU to 2800 (and the HT at 300)!
Can anyone help me understand these values? Anyone else with the same processor having similar values? Is it the mobo that puts in the CPU/DRAM ratio?

| DDR2 limitations Guest 03:16:06 |
| | -Hi everyone,
I recently installed a new AM2 4800+ with 4GB of RAM on an ASUS M2N-E (suppose to be very stable motherobard). Everything works great except when I have the 4GB of RAM in the board -- Windows doesn't want to load (ntkrnlmp.exe refuses to load). If I remove one of my 1GB DDR2 800Mhz DIMM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?item=N82E16820220142), things work just fine (although it falls into single-channel mode).
The funny thing is that when I run Memtest86+ with the full 4GB of RAM, no errors. Do you all know if this is a common problem or do I need to tweak my BIOS to not use "Auto" for all the memory settings? I thought 64-bit wouldn't have memory stick bugs like before. hmm..

| Strange sound from motherboard Mikaelstaldal 00:52:06 |
| | I recently bought a new custom built computer. It has an ASUS A8V-E Deluxe motherboard and an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU.
My problem is that the computer emits a strange annoying high frequency sound. The sound seems to come from the motherboard (or CPU). It is not from any fan, I tried to disable both fans on the motherboard, but the sound is still there. It is not from the video adapter, I tried to remove it (that's the only add-on card on the motherboard).
What is this sound? And how can I get rid of it?

| Underclocking a 266 FSB Duron to 200 FSB - could it work? Slugbug 00:38:52 |
| | Here is the scenario: a number of years back, I built two systems for my Dad using the ECS K7VZA motherboard, (BIOS revision 1, not 3 - I.E. BT133 chipset, not BT133a) and another for my sister. (+ 1 system for myself, 4 total) This is a socket A motherboard that operates at 200 MHz FSB. The manufacturer website says it will support Duron up to 800 MHz. The two up at my Dad's place have Duron 700 MHz cpu's in them, and so does the one at my sister's place.
I have one down here, and decided to try putting a Duron 1.3 GHz cpu in. It runs fine, but is not recognized completely by the BIOS. Windows reports it as an Athlon 1.3 GHz. However, the system really does seem to be running about twice as fast as it used to. Everything is much faster.
So, I've verified that it will work with AMD Duron processors, up to 1.3 GHz, despite the fact that the manufacturer's website does not show support for any Duron above 800 MHz. I'm starting to think that they just never updated their manuals or something, after the new processors came out.
Here is a link to the manufacturer "support" chart:
http://www.ecsusa.com/support/table_palomino.html
Note that an Athlon 1.4 GHz is supposed to be the fastest cpu that it can support, and the revision 1 BIOS doesn't show support for 266 MHz FSB. However, this does not necessarily mean that a 266 FSB CPU won't run on it.
Since I was able to get a Duron 1.3 GHz cpu to run just fine on it, I was wondering if I might be able to get a Duron 1.8 GHz (266 FSB) to run as well. If my calculations are right, it would end up running at 200 FSB instead, which would clock it in a hair under 1.5 GHz. Am I right?
The reason I am even thinking about this becomes apparent if you do a search for Durons on pricewatch. I am thinking about upgrading both of my Dad's systems, (& possibly my sister's) and 1.3 GHz Durons have become a bit scarce, evidently. Here are the prices:
Duron 1.3 - cheapest is $99 (I'd be better off getting the Athlon 1.2 for $43)
Duron 1.8 - $36.50, shipped
So, if the Duron 1.8 will operate at 200 FSB (and I think it might), then I could upgrade all 3 systems and make them feel quite a bit faster for just over $100. No need to change motherboard or upgrade memory.
Has anyone out there ever tried running a processor at lower than its advertised FSB speed? Is this feasible? If so, I can save a wad of cash simply by buying 3 Durons as upgrades. I know, Durons aren't exactly Athlon 64's - I realize that. However, even my Duron 1.3 GHz made my system seem to fly compared to the Duron 700 MHz I originally had in there. Plus, without going into debt, about $120 is the cash I have on hand, so I could actually afford to do this upgrade. I'd just like to know if it will work before I spend the dough.
P.S. - I've heard a few folks say that the BT133 chipset on the ECS K7VZA mboard was originally expected to support 266 FSB when it was manufactured. This would explain why the advertising on the box said that it would support future CPU's above 1.5 GHz, and everyone expected these to be the Athlon XP processors. However, while on paper this chipset was expected to support 266, in practice it evidently didn't run stably enough, or something like that, so they soldered some connections that were originally supposed to be jumpers, and didn't include information about the pins in the manual, or on their website.
