IBM announced 5 server models based on the Socket F/Rev F Opterons. Despite all of the hoopla surrounding Woodcrest, it does look like the Opteron momentum keeps growing. A recent article also said that AMD has now captured 25% of the overall x86 server market already.

| Intel to open-source its graphics drivers Yousuf Khan 21:50:25 |
| | It seems that Intel and AMD are so competitive with each other that they even come up with the same thoughts at the same time. Now that's hyper-competition. AMD was musing about this too just a few days ago about ATI's drivers.

| Cool 'n Quiet Bards1888 16:53:15 |
| | can anyone cofirm/deny that cool'n quiet only works in 64 bit mode, under linux specifically. I have tried Centos 4.2 (Redhat Clone) and when I install the i386 version it does not throttle the CPU (cat /proc/cpuinfo shows the CPU always at maximum speed) however on the 64bit version the CPU slows down to 1ghz courtesy of the 'cpuspeed' daemon. This daemon does not even seem to exist on the i386 version.
Cheers.

| Installed New Power Supply Gravitywell 06:36:23 |
| | I just got a new power supply for my newer computer (Amd) and installed it; turned it on: the keyboard numlock, caps lock, scroll lock leds on the keyboard lit for a couple seconds, nothing else happened- no fans (even the ps fan) started, or no bios start message or anything. Could this be a motherboard issue or is my new PS possibly bad?

| CPU for a really old laptop Nobody@Nowhere.Net 19:14:57 |
| | I got hold of a real antic - toshiba satellite 2515cds with PMMX-266. If anyone remembers how to deal with this dinosaur, please answer a few questions: 1. Is it regular Socket 7 or something different? 2. Are there any multiplier and (hardly possible but still hope) FSB clock jumpers? What are possible FSB settings? 3. Did anyone try AMD k6-2+ or 3+ in this? Did it work?
My plan is to use one of these (whatever I can have on ebay or anywhere else - they must be around $20) to make this thing at least marginally capable to run win2k. Even if the bus is locked at 66, it still would make the CPU run at 400. If, against the odds, the bus can be set to 75, that would mean 450. On-chip L2 will also speed things up. And if the chipset happens to be Super7 (snowball in hell chance) this baby might go up to 600. Right now it has only a corrupt win98 that boots only to safe mode, and no NIC, so I can't even load something like Sandra to get more info about the system. I want to install win2k and office and give it to old folks - for browsing, email, and light MS Word typing this thing should be marginally adequate. I just don't want them to deal with crappy 9x, and 2k needs a bit more horsepower than 266. TIA NNN

| SiS 748: best socket A chipset? Pigdos 18:31:53 |
| | I've never personally owned a motherboard using this chipset and I actually can't even name one motherboard that uses this chipset, but on paper it looks better than the Nforce2. It supports the same amount and types of memory as the Nforce2 but features the Mutiol Northbridge/Southbridge interface which communicates at 1GBps, which I beleive is faster than the Nforce2 Northbridge/Southbridge communication channel. So was/is it the best socket A chipset? Anyone ever owned a motherboard using this chipset?

| Latest news on AMD price cuts? Guest 20:36:52 |
| | Anyone know what's the latest on AMDs rumoured price cuts? Are they going to be on July 28th after the Conroe officially launches? [And therefore probably won't be noticable to us until August at earliest
]
I ask because I'm helping someone assemble a new comp. It's only for Office work and the internet so will probably just be a Sempron so unlikely to make that much difference in any case but just wondering how things are going. Actually I am considering a Pentium D 805 because as much as I dislike Intel and as crappy as the Pentium D is, this doesn't change the fact that the average users doesn't ever see or need the performance anyway but the advantages of dual core, especially with Windows' sometimes crappy thread management may be be noticeable. But it's a bit expensive and I expect extremely light usage in any case so I'd probably just end up sticking with the Sempron
Cheers

| Damaged to cpu? Dan 19:16:41 |
| | I managed to pull a AMD64 s939 cpu out of its socket without releasing the lever on the side of the socket! After a thorough examination it seems to be ok (no missing/bent pins) but, apart from actually plugging it in to another mobo, is it possible that it will still work?

| Macro-Op fusion does not work in 64-bit mode YKhan 09:41:26 |
| | "The thing is though, while MOF may be touted as the best thing since sliced bread, it does not cause many performance problems when it is off. It appears that the bottleneck in the CPU is not in that aspect of the pipeline, so its loss has little speed impact. More on this when the testing is complete." http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=33347
Macro-op Fusion was one of the big hype items of the Conroe/Merom/Woodcrest. This feature is supposed to be one of the things giving Intel it's edge over AMD in the performance wars. Now it turns out that it doesn't even work in 64-bit mode. But apparently it's no big deal. Most of us have already figured out that the real secret behind CMW is its big L2 cache, but Intel downplayed that. So Intel can't have it both ways, either MOF is important, and Intel will have to explain why it isn't available when in 64-bit mode and why CMW is crippled in that mode? Or MOF isn't important, and Intel has to admit that it's all due the cache.

| Thinkpad Synaptics driver YKhan 08:00:45 |
| | Thinkpads with both the touchpad and joybutton can't seem to use the standard Synaptics driver (which seems to be meant for touchpad-only systems). If you put the standard Synaptics driver in, then the joybutton features get degraded. The reason for upgrading to the Synaptics standard drivers would be to fix some of the well known scrolling problems that the touchpad has, the newer Synaptics drivers completely solve those. But then you may find that your joybutton buttons don't all work (for example the middle scroll button on the joybutton controls will stop functioning). I tend to use the touchpad and joybutton interchangeably -- certain things the touchpad is better at, while other times the joybutton wins out.
Has anyone found a solution to this? The standard Thinkpad drivers seem to be a hacked up old version of the Synaptics driver.

| AMD's 939 production halt sends prices tumbling SpamBox 11:40:59 |
| | I saw this: -
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=32603
and now I'm really miffed. I bought an Asrock 939Dual-Sata2, an Ath64 3000 and top spec RAM with the thought that in a year or two, I would be able to pick up a better 939 as the prices would have dropped. Now it turns out that AMD have stopped production of skt939 CPUs. What a bummer. I know that with this mobo I have the AM2 upgrade path, but that wasn't quite what I had in mind.
Bugger.
