taking a short clip from a dvd Deb 17:04:13
I want to be able to take a clip from a dvd (about a minute long) and
convert it to .avi, .mpg or .mov. Is there any free (or very cheap)
software out there that will allow me to rip a small section of a dvd? And
before you ask I have ask permission.

TIA

Looking for decent inexpensive DVD authoring package - W2K Sean Straw 16:58:23

Tried Nero, tried MyDVD Studio 6.1.x (what a piece of junk - slow as
molasses, has gross errors in disc usage estimates, and not
infrequently would bail without so much as an application error
onscreen - I'd set it up to do it's thing which I know would take
several HOURS, and come back later to find that the program wasn't
running anymore - not so much as an error dialog on screen).

I'd try Pinnacle, but I've got zero interest in switching to XP just
to burn discs - my w2k load is clean and stable.

I've got about 600GB of edited video I want to burn to discs (various
programs transferred from my TiVo boxes), and I need a no-frills
solution. Basic menus, configurable text, and reliable transcoding.
The program doesn't need to do EDITING - just mpeg transforms as
necessary to bring a video to DVD compliance, and the DVD mastering
itself. Heck, as long as it'll produce an ISO, it doesn't even need
to burn to disc.

Is there such a beast?

HDTV Tivo question Jack Snodgrass 09:46:57
The picture quality of my SD DTV Tivo on my
32" HDTV lcd is not all that great. The OTA
HDTV picuture is great... the SD DTV Tivo
picture is poor in comparison. I am pretty
sure if I went to a 65" screen the issues
would be magnified.

For non HDTV signals... does the HD Tivo
HR10-250 give a better picture to the HDTV
monitor? I'm talking about channels like
the Sci-Fi channel or FX or HGTV, etc...
not channels with any HD content... but
playing via the HD Tivo on a HD Tv.

Thanks - jack

Pulse DVD Ben Thomas 09:33:01
 Hi all,

I'm not sure if it's already been discussed here but I thought I'd pass
on the message that Pulse by Pink Floyd is now available on DVD in
Melbourne.

Unfortunately it's in 4:3 but you can't have everything.

Lite-On DVD SOHD-167T have problems reading Memorex DVDs? Guest 06:28:34
Is it me or do Lite-On DVD SOHD-167T have problems reading Memorex DVDs (dark aqua
color)? I seem to get bad block errors in Windows XP Pro. SP2 when reading DVD burns.
I tried two DVDs already.

I tried Office Depot brand DVD+RWs (dark gray?), and had no problems. The Memorex are
fine because I used it in a HP DVD drive without problems.

Thank you in advance. :)

need a new DVD burning program (possibly freeware) Guest 06:03:47
I (for awhile) was using "MedioStream neoDVDstandard3" I got this when
I purchased my ATI All-In-Wonder 9600xt video card (they must've gave
me a previous version than what was available). I went to their website
but they no longer support. I was hoping someone could help me find a
free DVD burning program. Using files (all variations) such as: MPEG,
AVI, ASF, WMV and to a lesser extent MOV. That program I was using
doesn't always work; I think it might the error rate or something the
program can take (sensitivity/error level). Well if you know anything
good please tell me. Thanks.

PLEXTOR Burner acting up Ricrat 04:47:23
I have the external PX-716UF which I got over a year ago. I notice
it's taking at least 7 minutes more to cache the tracks. Is this
normal? Is there firmware updates to correct this?
I use TY and had no problems with them.
I've seen other newsgroups mention problems and they just throw their
burners away. It seems to happen after about a year of use. The main
feature I like is the 8megs of buffer--is this a big feature? I have
no problems using 8x---it's just it's slowing down.
What can be done. No comedians please.

set up some season passes. When I tried to do that the TIVO got
hung-up/stuck. I am wondering how to fix this, and any help would be
appreciated.

program that will shrink movies Aaronep@Pacbell.Net 04:20:21
I have tried to use DVD Shrink latest version to shrink contents of two
movies so that they will fit on one disk. After going through the
necessary steps to the point where the data is ready to be burned onto
a dvd disk, an error message appears saying that there is not enough
room on disk to accomodate the data.

I have tried using the manual compression mode in DVD Shrink's
re-author mode, but that did not work either. I posted the problem
here and was told it was best to leave compression in Automatic mode,
which I have also tried, without success.

I know that if use too much compression, the quality of the finished
output is diminished.

However, is there a program other than DVD Shrink which would enable me
to control the compression so that I can compress so that contents will
fit onto one disk?

best, Aaron

I have been looking for a DVD/HDD Recorder with VCR but have not come

Does anyone know if there is such a product out at the moment ?

How to Convert VOB files Guest 13:28:06
I had a company convert 8mm films to DVD. I was provided 2 DVDs that
contain IFO, BUP & VOB files. The VOB files are 1, 048,018KB each and
there are (6) of them. All files are located in a TS_Video folder. The
DVDs play in Windows Media Player. However I need to play them in Roxio
Easy Media Creator 8 and extract portions of each VOB file that can be
part of a slideshow that has regular photos too. There is no audio with
these files.

1. What are the files that I received, ie what is an IFO file, etc???
2. I have read that you can change the VOB filetype to an AVI then play
it. Is that all I have to do?
3. Is there another software package to do the conversion before
editing in Roxio??

Thanks!

Samsung DVD-HR725 HDD Recorder - Playback Aspect Ratio Problem Justin Wigg 11:26:17
 Hi again all...

Got a question for anyone out there with one of these units. I have the
aspect ratio on the 725 set to 16:9 and when I record internally on
either HDD or DVD and play it back then everything's fine. Also,
playing commercial DVDs is fine.

However when this unit plays the discs that I have authored on my PC
(including either raw DivX files or authored DVDs) then the Samsung
seems to be trying to go into some kind of super-widescreen mode and
the aspect ratio is compressed. (I notice that it does the same thing
on any photos that I import.) It's like it thinks the aspect ratio on
the disc is 16:9, and the player is set to 4:3 letterbox. Therefore
it's adding black bars to the top and bottom of an image that is
already 16:9. I'm guessing that it's one of two things:

1. I need to change something on the player.
2. There's something on my PC that needs to be set to write the video
file correctly. (I don't seem to be able to tell the DivX burner what
ratio to burn it at though. PowerProducer doesn't have that option
either, so I'm thinking this is not the issue?)

I'm assuming that it's nothing to do with running an HDMI output as
everything's fine for commercial discs. Can anyone out there give me
any help?

Thanks in advance...

Justin

DVD text missing when using CloneDVD (Latest video) Guest 08:27:36
 Hi all,

I am using AnyDVD and CloneDVD to backup my DVDs to hard disk/dvds. I
have a Sony 400DVD Juke box. I stack all my backup DVDs in the Sony
and keep the originals safe.

I have seen that for most of the movies, if I use the original DVD, the
title (name of the move) of the DVD is automatically picked up by the
Sony. But if I use my backup, the Sony does not pickup the name.

With 400 dvds in the juke box, it is cumbersome for me to add name to
each dvd, I would rather have Sony pick up the name of DVD from within
the DVD.

A little bit of research, I found that the DVD text section contains
the "name of the movie" information. My guess is the AnyDVD/Clone DVd
combo is some how not copying the DVD text section properly and hence
the issue.

Any anyone provide correct me/provide more insight and possible
solution.

Regards
Northikan.

Help replacing dead Toshiba RS-TX20 HDD? Guest 08:19:45
Hello. I hope someone can point me in the right direction. I have a
Toshiba RS-TX20 that is stuck on the "Almost There. Just a few minutes
more..." screen. I also don't hear the hard drive spinning. I was told
by Toshiba that it sounds like a failing HDD. Toshiba wants $65+ to
take a look at it, but I have a brand new Seagate 200 GB HD laying
around and would to take a shot at swapping the modem out myself, but
since the Tivo's original HDD doesn't work I am guessing I can't back
it up and copy it over to the new HDD.

If someone can tell me where to begin. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks for any help.

Help: DTV digital autio to SoundBlaster Audigy Jack Snodgrass 04:06:50
My DTV SD-DVR40 ( something like that ) has a optical
out for 5.1 surround sound ( I think )

My SoundBlaster Audigy is supposed to have SPDIF
and optical ( but I don't see an optical plug on the
back ) in.

I'd like to be able to plug my DTV Tivo into my SB card
so I can listen to 5.1 surrpound sound on my PC surround
sound system.

Has anyone done anything like this... what kinds of cables
do I have to use?

Thanks - jack
