| Cannot format dvd-r Quasar 01:16:44 |
| | Hi everybody
Hope you can help me: I use rewritable dvds (verbatim dvd-rw) with my home dvd/hd recorder LG RH7500. Once I format the dvd-rw with that equipment, I cannot use it anymore on my pc. In fact if I try to format the rewritable dvd with nero (or alcohol) it says: "The disc is not rewritable and therefore cannot be erased". But if I click the "info" button it reads the dvd is RW and empty.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong...
Thanks in advance,
Quasar

| Hinsdale Tivo Upgrades WIlliam 22:15:15 |
| | I decided to put a larger HD into my DirecTV Tivo and ordered a "drop in" HD (I know nothing about Linux) from Hinsdale TiVo Upgrades. It arrived in fine shape and I will probably put it in tomorrow.
However, neither on their website nor in the package they sent me is there any phone number or other way to contact them if anything is wrong or the HD is defective or whatever. That made me concerned as it did not seem accidental. Does anyone know a way to contact them should I need to?

| Copy DVD to hard disk Guest 19:14:19 |
| | Hi,
Can a DVD be copied to the hard drive in a reasonable amount of time for later viewing?
Suppose we are going on a trip and want to bring 10 movies out of our collection with us on our laptop. The day before we leave we decide which movies those will be and proceed popping dvd's into the laptop and copying them to the hard drive. I have been looking at DVD Shrink for that, but am not able to answer the following questions: : Can this be done in reasonable time, e.g. 30 min per movie? Can this be done in a way that preserves dvd features (menu, subtitles, etc) while compressing it to about 2 gb?
Very many thanks in advance!

| dvd shrink cannot connect trf Bob Wright 13:04:25 |
| | Any idea what cannot connect trf means and how to cure it? Dvd shrink processes and shrinks the file to fit dvd+r, then displays the error message. I can then launch Nero 6.6.1.4 and burn the files it created to a dvd.

I just got a burner and installed Nero 7 Essentails. I need to create a bootable cd but haven't figured out how to do that. I've been all through the software and don't see any choices for making a bootable cd. What am I missing or should I get a different program for this?
thanks, charles...

| Why use divx / xvid? Millie Tant 06:00:16 |
| | Hi there,
I was wondering why folks use divx or xvid over apps such as dvd shrink? I use xvid to convert vids to watch on my portable player, but I know people who convert movies to watch on the tv. The encoding time is much longer, esp when doing 2 pass which I always do.
I'm not talking about portable devices, just folks who rip to watch on the tv.
I'd be interested to hear peoples views on this.

| Seek secret camcorder (like TV documentaries) Anne R 05:20:04 |
| | I'm in the UK and am looking for a secret camcorder similar to what they probably use in TV documentaries.
I'm getting really messed up by a doctor (NHS hospital doc) and I want to record the stuff I have to go through in consultations as proof for a complaint. The consultations are only discussion and not a physical exam. Hard to explain but can't change doc easily.
I'm guessing that some consumer camcorders may now small enough to hide on one's body. But I'm not well-off so I don't want to spend a ton of cash.
Certainly camcorders are now small enough to hide in a bag with the lens pointing outwards through a hole in the bag but I guess I would need one with a wide-ish angle and a mic suited to picking up conversation in a small room.
Can anyone recommend some models to put on my shortlist? Especially if they are end-of-line and good deals can be had at the moment.
Thank you. Anne

| TT1620 firmware question Omnibus 02:27:48 |
| | My TT1620 stopped playing DVDs after a few days and I lost the receipt, so I took it apart and can't find anything obvious wrong with the mechanics. The laser seems to scan for info and the servos all seem to react appropriately, so I'm hoping that it is some software bug that might have been fixed in a newer software version. And I was hoping that someone might help me or direct me somewhere that can.
I took a stroll on the Cyberhome ftp site and downloaded the file, TT1620MU_534.nrg. I also read how someone used the Cyberhome files as well. The problem is, I have no idea what these files are for, or how I download them to the DVR. I found port J10 on the motherboard which has TX and RX pins and may be the access point, but I don't know what protocol or format this is in (RS-232, 9600 8N1?).
My current code versions are (according to the on-screen display):
Ui: C00065MTU Servo: DX043D D 037S Adsp: V08.00.01.46 R0.2 Control: DVR1620TTN1M02540

| Any software that reads DVDs at LP ? Richard Brooks 22:55:20 |
| | I use both TDA 1.6 and InterVideo WinDVD Creator 2.
If the DVD has been recorded on a set top box at LP then TDA shows no DVD entries to import and although I can get around this in WinDVDC by loading up the VOBs and pasting them together, the durations do not report correctly and segments are missing.
Apart from linking up two DVD units, one playing and the other then recording at standard speed, which authoring software can import DVD recordings at any speed ?
Many thanks,
Richard.

| SonicStage write / erase problem Matti Lamprhey 19:02:53 |
| | I've been using SonicStage v1.x and later v2.1 to create ATRAC3 CDs for 3 years or so, all working reasonably well. I recently upgraded from XP sp1 to sp2, and then tried SonicStage yesterday for the first time since that upgrade. Although it could read audio CDs and rip them into its library quite satisfactorily, it was unable to write CD-R and CD-RW discs, and to erase the CD-RW ones. (I don't have CD+R or CD+RW discs but assume it's unlikely to behave differently with these.)
I also have Nero, and that has no problems writing or erasing these discs. The primary optical drive is a Ricoh MP5308D, and I also have a secondary Pioneer drive which behaves identically.
The thing which has changed is the service pack level of XP, so I wondered whether the ASPI layer had been 'downgraded' in the course of that -- Nero uses its own ASPI software, I believe, so that would explain why that still worked OK. I went to the Adaptec site and downloaded the latest ASPI software (v4.71.2). That seems to have installed OK and the ASPICHK utility which came with it is happy. It hasn't fixed the problem with SonicStage, though!
I then installed the latest version of SonicStage (v4.0.00.05080) from Sony's site, but that hasn't fixed the problem either. The specific error message I get when trying to erase is "SonicStage (00001eea-1921) Initialization of the media failed (Error code 0000662e)".
I've tried the SonicStage forum alt.audio.minidisc but they don't seem to be able to assist. The Sony support site contains nothing relevant, unfortunately.

| DVD decrypter hijacking burner Frel 17:22:41 |
| | I had a probelm trying to burn a DVD then noticed DVD decrypter had set itself up to try and burn, requiring a download to do it.
Anyone had a probelm like this before?
I deleted DVD decrypter and reloaded Nero and all worked fine. I could always re install DVD decrypter when DVD shrink fails the test as I'm a bit wary of DVD decrypter after that.

| Why have all my remotes gone haywire? Claude 09:16:39 |
| | Earlier this week all my remotes went stupid simultaneously. The audio remote continued raising or lowering the volume after the button had been released or wouldn't operate any functions whatsoever. The PVR responded extremely slowly or not at all to any commands. The STB would turn on for a few seconds then go off. The TV also refused to respond. Fortunately, the equipment worked without the remotes but of course some functions are simply not accessible without the remote. Then about 36 hours later all the remotes returned to their previous state. I've ruled out the batteries and I've ruled out the kids dropping the remotes. So what would cause this? Is it something like 'dirty' power? Some form of interference (I even moved the Harmony 520 that I'd been experimenting with out of the room just in case)? Any suggestions?
