DVD-R in Sylvania SSR90V4

Rick Langston 3 May 2007 20:35:09
Sam's had a whole pile of these units. I picked one up.

It claims to record on DVD-R and DVD-RW media. I tried (new, unused)
Verbatim DVD-R
discs that work fine in my Panasonic DMR-E75V unit, but they are rejected by
the
Sylvania.

Has anyone else had any experience with these units?

I started googling and it appears that this unit requires 4X media. The
Verbatim media
I'm using is 8X. Looks like I'll be taking this unit back.

you have to call Sylvania to get a software upgrade so the unit can write on -R and -RW DVDS at 1-8x speed. The unit only writes to 4x. Call 800-605-8453 and they will send you a disk.

I did the upgrade and still couldn't get it to read a 4x dvd-rw. Anyone else have this problem?

The manual states this unit cannot record on the following disks.
DVD-R General Ver 2.0/8x
DVD-RW Ver 1.2/2-4x CPRM compatible

I have one of these and it seems to record OK on 4X disks. I have however noticed that the autochapter feature doesn't work. It's set up to autochapter every 10 minutes but I don't get any chapter-ing

It worked until the warranty ran out. Now it won't record on anything that wasn't formated prior (same brand and model discs no longer work). I'm going to take an axe to it and mail it back to Sylvania with a "stongly worded letter". You get what you pay for, I guess. Sylvania (censored); a pox on their families.

 Sylvania SSR90V4
I just bought one at Sams Club. It won't record on either VCR or DVD and won't play a DVD. I'm returning it.

Hey everyone, thanks for posting. I'm going insane trying to get the dadgum thing to work. Again, bought it at Sam's Club. Tried two different media - no success. Taking it back tomorrow. I wondered why it was $100 less than all the others. Frankly it's too limited and will be out of date soon. Wish I had read the posts sooner.

Perhaps smearing (censored) on the dvd will make it run better.

I'm afraid I have to join the club of the frustrated. After reading the manual and trying THREE different DVD-R's, this piece of shit is going back! Sylvania (censored)!

I also have an SSR90V4 and experienced DVD recording problems at first. The manual specifies what type of blank media it accepts, and also specifically says it will not accept 8x media (which is the usual type one finds nowdays). I was able to locate the type the manual calls for and it does work. However, I also called the support line, and they have available a free 8x firmware upgrade which they sent me and I have updated my unit.
Tech support will want you to tell them the software version of your unit. To make the unit display it, the procedure is to press this sequence of buttons on the remote control, rapidly: CMSKIP-1-2-3 (CMSKIP is a button). A screen should appear on your TV displaying the Model and two firmware versions. The last line of my firmware read, "FE R15_033MST040909F". The "R15" was the significant portion that they needed in my case. Probably best to copy down the entire screen if yours is different.
Note, when you call tech support, you may be in the queue briefly (less than 2 minutes) and then be sent to a place to leave a voice message. Hang up and call back again. Eventually, you will be connected to a live person. Also, if you hear a person pick up the line briefly and then it goes back to waiting, this is a good sign, as they will eventually answer; a person may pick up briefly several times before you actually get someone, but at least it stops dumping you to voice mail. A poor system no doubt, but that is how to get through it.
When you get the update disk, you have to call back again to get the install procedure that goes like this (at least for my R15 update). READ BEFORE STARTING:
1. Remove any tape or disc in the unit
2. On the remote, press CMSKIP-6-5-4 rapidly. You should get a TV screen indicating firmware update.
3. Insert the CD into the unit. The timer display on the unit will show 2:00 and count down two minutes.
4. When it completes, the tray will eject the disc. Remove the disc, but LEAVE THE TRAY OUT.
5. Press the power button to turn the unit off. After about 15 seconds, the tray will go in, and the update is completed.
The upgrade CD I received is not labeled with any copyright notice, so, I am willing to email a copy of the file to burn on your own CD, or send a copy of the CD itself (in your self-addressed, stamped mailer). Email me via tntmnm "at" spearnet.net . The reason is, I spent a lot of time in the queue of their tech support, and I am willing to let people avoid this. Note, if you do not have software version R15, then you have to get your own update disc.

I should have also suggested this in my earlier posting: I can email you the file that is on the upgrade disk (about 500KB compressed), and you can make your own update CD. This has been done successfully by another user.

PEOPLE!!!
PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE POSTS!!!
Tim MnM WANTS YOU TO EMAIL THE FILE REQUEST - DO NOT POST YOUR REQUEST HERE - HE DOES NOT GET NOTIFIED!!!!
:-?

"Apologies to anyone recently posting requests to this thread, I do not get notified. I also don't track who I have sent the file to... Please email firmware requests to: tntmnm "at" spearnet.net"

WOW!!! He posted that like twice!!

And for you confused people he wrote out his email as tntmnm "at" spearnet.net because if he used the @ symbol, spambots that scour blogs and posts could harvest his email address and he's avoiding spam. SO... replace "at" with @ and you're DISCO!

Just got tired of the same dumb request OVER and OVER and OVER....

After updating, I have used HP 8x and Sony 16x DVD-R, as well as the original Memorex 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW that worked before the update. So is your comment before or after the update?

When emailing me a firmware request for the SSR90V4 or SRDV495, please tell me your current firmware version, because I have two different updates. Press CMSKIP-1-2-3 on the remote rapidly (CMSKIP is a button), and you will get a TV display something like this (see also screenshot at the end of this post):

Model Name : xxxxx

Firmware Version
BE : xxx
FE : <version>

Where <version> may be one of these:

NRS0106 MST040326 (ask me for the NRS update)
NRS0113 MST040326 (ask me for the NRS update)
R15_033MST040909F (ask me for the R15 update)

If <version> starts with NRS0115 or R15_037, then your unit is up to date for the updates I have.

The NRS update will allow 8x DVD-R (and NOT 16x); R15 will allow 16x DVD-R. The update does nothing for DVD-RW media compatibility. Don't apply the wrong update, your unit can become unrepairable (according to Funai).

I personally have the R15 update, and have used these DVD-R media types:
Memorex 4x (worked pre-update)
Memorex 2x (DVD-RW, worked pre-update)
HP 8x, 16x
Verbatum 8x
Sony 16x

Thanks to all the feedback from other users, I continue to get one request a week on average.

Regards,
Tim
