DirecTivo Fan Going Out

Von Fourche 12 June 2006 16:34:26

I've had a DirecTivo for almost two years now. The fan in it is getting
louder. It's not loud all the time tho. It just started about two nights
ago. I heard it around 10pm. I figured the fan would be broken by the time
I got up in the morning. Well, in the morning it was fine. Then it got
loud again last night. Then it stopped. Today it was loud but now it's
quite again.

Does the fan in a DirecTivo box spin at different speeds according to
how hot it is? Could dust be causing the noise? I looked at the back of it
for a second and it was very dusty. If the fan is going out is it possible
to replace it? I've had to replace a fan in a computer a few months ago and
I was able to do it.

Thanks!

Yes, I plan on switching in the next week or so. But the DirecTivo has
worked great. Even if I'm going to throw it in the closet while I try out
Dish I want it 100% operable.

The fans on that link look like computer fans.

Yes.
Could dust be causing the noise?

Yes.

Yes, they pretty much are. But by ordering through them, by model number,
you are getting the one that will fit correctly as well as a torx driver for
opening the case (that's a bonus for people who don't have one already)

Thanks!

I believe you can get a replacement fan at www.weakknees.com. If not there,
try 9th tee (you'll have to look up their website).

You might also want to be concerned about the noise level. I know my
unit is in the bedroom and on my first unit the fan was way too loud
for my taste and I replaced it with a fan from Weakness just to get it
quieter. That unit just died and I replaced it with a DSR708. The fan
in that unit is just barely quiet enough. I would prefer it to be
little quieter in fact but it is not bad enough to replace.

most of the time when the fans start making noise it is the bearings
that are going bad and just blowing out the dust will not fix that
problem.

The main issue with fan is getting one small enough since the fan is
smaller than most computer case fans or power supply fans.

I seem to remember the fan I got from Weakness had the exact same plug
so I did not have to cut and sautering the wires.

Do be so concerned with noise, that you dont keep track of the internal
temperature of your unit

Fans that are quieter often are running slower and not cooling as much
(or enough). I now run my DirecTiVos with their top off, and a 4"
external fan blowing on them. They run at about 32 degrees.

While possible, a quieter and/or slower fan does not necessarily mean
less airflow, and thus less cooling, then a louder, faster fan. Fan
diameter must be taken into account. Fans with larger diameters move
more air at slower fan speeds. That's why most acoustically aware PC
cases use quieter 120 mm fans, rather than the typical stock 80 mm fans.

It's also why Passenger jets use those gargantuan external (though
shrouded) bypass fans (I worked for Pratt&Whitney out of college for a
while, where I learned *a lot* about fans and compressors).

More blades on a fan also means less noise, though, all else being
equal, less airflow as well.

I might worry about dust and foreign matter building up in crannies and
possibly eventually causing problems with the case open. Or a roach or
rodent wandering in :-).
