you have to call Sylvania to get a software upgrade so the unit can write on -R and -RW DVDS at 1-8x speed. The unit only writes to 4x. Call 800-605-8453 and they will send you a disk.

I installed a Toshiba SD-R5372 DVD writer in my WindowsXP system some months ago for its well-known features to replace my old DVD writer. But, may be due to my hard luck (I don't know), no matter what kind of disc I inserted (new/old CDs, DVDs, friends discs, original DVD/VCD movies, DVD player demonstration discs...) into the drive, after some usual seeking movement for a few seconds, the window (or the drive) just kept on to report "No disc to read" or "Please put disc in the drive"! I checked the drive with many disc-writing softwares (Nero Burning Rom, Pinnacle Studio maker, Ulead softwares, including WindowsXP system/hardware manager...etc) they just reported the drive was OK and full of supporting features! I of course also checked the hardware installation and cable setup and no fault was found. In fact, this drive is just a replacement of the old one under the same old Windows auto default settings with its approval of "new device found and now usable...". I can not figure out what's wrong with this SD-R5372 drive. I wondered if the drive is "blind!" because this new drive has never read anything since its installion. I would be grateful if any folks and experts out there can enlighten me with any possible problem with this "blinded" drive and how to fix it. Thanks a lot.
To answer to Bob Alan, if you have another recorded program after the 2 hours program, just playback the next program. Then rewind prior to the beginning of the that title. The DMR will skip to the prior title from the end. If the 2 hours program is the last, you can record a 10 seconds program at the end then do that trick.
Got this message using Nero 7, trying to burn a dvd. All seems well, information is burnt to dvd but get this message at the end and therefore cannot read dvd. Any help would be greatfull. Thanks
