| Mackie Onyx Mixer & Card on Ebay Denovo 18:05:20 |
| | Hello folks
I'm trying to move some gear to help my cash flow. They are a Mackie Onyx 1220 Firewire mixer and the corresponding Onyx Firewire I/O card. Both units are brand new. The mixer is still in a sealed box. I also have a second 1220 in a sealed box (don't ask...) that isn't up on auction but is available for sale, if you are interested.

I also have an used excellent Ensoniq MR76 keyboard on Ebay as well.
Thanks for looking.
Best,
Charles

| Any comments on Quest PA speakers? Guest 16:35:41 |
| | I am looking for replacements for my current PA speakers. It's a little PA used for jazz performances. The current speakers are JBL Eon15. Efficient, but not crisp or clear. I have heard EVSXs and they impressed as very accurate and sweet, so I was looking at EVSX100s. Someone has suggested Quest speakers, specifically QS350. These are Chinese-built, Australian-designed. The suggestion is these are more efficient, better sounding, cheaper and reliable. Good deal if it's true. Does anyone know Quest speakers. If so, any comments? Thanks, Ric

| Replacement Earmuffs for headphones? Mexican Equivalent 13:03:09 |
| | I have one of those sturdy, Phillips headphones with the big earmuffs that cover the entire ear. I love these headphones, and It's in perfectly good condition... except foam in the earmuffs recently got a shredded to pieces by a mischievous feline.
Is there such a thing as a replacement earmuff for these big headphones? Or am I gonna have to discard the entire thing and buy a new one?

| Can mac pro tools le (v 5.0.1) audio be imported into current PC software like Tracktion 2? Leucopogon 04:49:53 |
| | Hi everybody,
This is my first ever post here. I guess the subject says it all really. But let me explain the situation I find myself in a little better.
Basically, about 5 or 6 years ago I invested in a Digidesign Digi001 rig for my Blue G3 Mac. This worked great and I was very happy with it. Then I moved interstate and couldn't take my recording set up with me.
Fast forward to this year when I have moved back to the same city as my parents (who were storing my Digi001 rig for me) and have resumed my interest in home recording. I fired up the trusty old G3 (which is running Mac OS 8.6 by the way) and tried everything out and it works just fine to my relief.
However, my main collaborator in music is running Tracktion 2 on his PC and I was thinking of possible ways in which I can record multiple tracks of drums at my house using my Mac setup (ie. Digi001 with Pro Tools LE 5.0.1) and be able to export the files so that they can be successfully imported into Tracktion 2 on my friend's Windows xp PC.
I have tried simply burning my Mac Pro Tools audio files onto CD and loaded them into my Windows XP machine but they are not recognised at all by windows and will not playback or import into Tracktion 2.
So basically, my question is: what is the most simple/efficient way for me to overcome this compatability issue of Pro Tools LE audio created on a mac being imported into current day PC multi-track software like Tracktion 2?
I would like to get my Digi001 connected to my PC as I'm sure this would be a good way to eliminate the need for any work around but I have read that this hardware is not compatible with Windows XP only W98. I have also looked into the possibility of installing 98 onto a seperate hard drive on my pc and using it as a dual boot machine so I can install protools and the digi 001 but i'm not really that up to speed with this level of computer tweaking and I'm afraid I'll botch up my machine which I really can't afford to do as I use it for my paying work a lot.
Any suggestions and help will be greatly appreciated.

| send 24 bit from DAW to adat possible? Amble 04:34:29 |
| | can i send my 24 bit signal from the DAW to an adat which is 16 or 20 bit? will it just truncate the extra bits? or will it not be compatible?
sound quality makes no difference for this application, it is just being used to feed sidechains and key triggers.
the adat would be fed by lightpipe from my RME 9652 adat lightpipe interface.
i run my daw (digital performer) at 24 bit, as well as my main converter, which would be running simultaneously.
any help would be appreciated.

| Blank minidisc labels for computer printers? Clark 03:55:34 |
| | For the past few years, I've labeled my Minidiscs with computer-printer labels manufactured by Neato.(Four disc labels and four slip-case labels per sheet, Part No. MLS-18115.) But now I can't find them at Neato's Web site or at any other dealers -- so I assume they've been discontinued.
Anyone know of another manufacturer or supplier? I really only need the disc labels (the ones with the notch in the upper left corner to fit the typical disc's label area), not the labels that are designed for the slip-cases.

| Effects of latency - is this claim true? David Grant 01:54:46 |
| | A good friend of mine who seems pretty well versed in music as well as pro-audio says most humans can't consiously detect less than 20ms latency (I assume he meant when monitoring a delayed signal within the rest of a mix). He said that there is, however, a considerably detrimental effect with respect to one's internal sense of pitch that results even from <20ms latencies which is why good live sound engineers avoid digital consoles or any kind of D/A --> A/D conversions which inherently induce latency. It might not have been interal pitch, but he was suggesting some kind of psycho-acoustical effect but I didn't really get it. It seemed a bit sketchy to me, but is this true? If not can someone guess as to how I might have misunderstood him?
These days it's not hard to get a DAW setup that provides 3-6ms latency using DSP hardware; I monitor myself at this latency when using VST instruments and I do feel like something's not quite right as compared to when I use a hardware synth with zero-latency monitoring. I can't put my finger on what it is, but I have to wonder if my friend here is right somehow. Anyone have clarification?
Dave

Thanks> a mucho! - Bob> bob@NOSPAMcoconutjoe.com> Well, of course, you can use the preamps in the 002R. The 002R preamps are really not bad at all. I seldom use them because a few years back I got a rack of 4 GML and a Millennia Media STT-1. They make a difference. You can get 2 channels of GML, but probably not for $1500.
Mixing gets a lot easier once you get above a certain quality level. It's really quite amazing. I worked for years with lesser gear and was always frustrated by the way the mix never got to where I thought it should. After I got better gear, the tracks just fit automatically. My mixes took less time and sounded better.

Ty Ford

| What will replace the CD? Guest 00:16:17 |
| | There have been a number of articles recently discussing the death of the CD, and wondering what might replace it commercially. Some of the possibilities discussed are flash memory, downloading a la iPod, or even sending info directly to the brain. Let's ignore this latter, since it's not presently possible, and attempt to answer the question of what might actually take the place of CDs. A successful replacement will have to have all the features of a CD, but solve a few of the CD's drawbacks. Among these are the following:
1. Not long enough playing time, as is evidenced by the large number of multi-CD sets on the market. 2. Too large. A 12cm disc will not fit in the pocket conveniently. Furthermore, the players are too large; they should be about the size of a minidisc player. 3. Stereo only. A new standard should allow for multi-channel playback.
A replacement technology should solve all these problems, while preserving the good features of the CD, notably:
1. Extremely high fidelity 2. Very low manufacturing cost 3. Easily adapted to home recording
How would you suggest solving the problems of the CD and preserving its features? If you have a suggestion, please respond.

| Audix "Micro" Range Bob Howes 00:06:20 |
| | Looking for something else on the Audix site I came across this range of very small condensor mics: http://www.audixusa.com/Acrobat/micros_spec_sheet_2.pdf
Has anybody here had any experience with them? If they sound okay, I can think of a number of applications where they would be good, especially with the range of clamps and holders they provide. Basically, I'm thinking of using them to augment my aging collection of C451s, swivels, extension tubes etc. for applications where a small, inconspicuous mic would be desireable.
