| USB versus non USB (LDC) mics? Guest 20:54:17 |
| | I am in the final stages of shopping for some pieces of my home studio. I was wonderin what the pros and cons are of USB (LDC) mics as against the traditional non USB ones?
- I know that LDCs typically need phantom power, so I will need a pre-amp for that. It seems the USB version of an LDC will Not need phantom power (will be USB powered)? - Also, that seems to eliminate the need for a preamp (vocals are directly converted to digital form, so analog pre-amp is pointless)? - This also seems to mean that my soundcard could Suck, but I will still record good vocals limited only by the mic's quality? - Which are the tried and tested good ones in the same league as the AKG Perception 100 and Studio Projects B1/C1?
Thanks!

| | I am not a sound guy so my question may generate considerable scoffing...
What's wrong with the old 57's and 58's? I used em for years and they seemed ok. Reading through some old posts, it seems you would much rather have teeth extracted than use them.
As an aside, what is the general opinion of the Beta58a's ?

Does anyone know the wiring of the 9v AC line to the Quadraverb 2? It is a >4 pin din plug. I emailed Alesis but they say they don't have this information!! Thanks for the help - Gordon.
The left pair of pins are connected together and are one connection, the right pair of pins are the other connection. It is AC so there is no polarity issue.
** Spot on.
By the way, does anyone know how to get rid of this stupid solid line on the left? Tried everything to delete it.
** After clicking on "Reply" - click "Format" and then " Plain Text".

| What happens when wireless batteries get low? Guest 16:42:11 |
| | I recently recorded interviews in an area with loud ambient music, using a dynamic reporters mic. I used a plug-in transmitter on the mic.
I did monitor with headphones but the ambiance was quite loud. When I listened to the recordings later the spoken word had a bit of what-sounded-like distortion, or maybe just a tendency to "crack up"/not be smooth. Now, maybe it was just coming in too loud to my cam's preamps.
Or ... what I was wondering, though, is if it's possible that if wireless batteries get low, but are still functional, that somehow the transmitter or receiver might be more inclined to have a distortion-type effect in the signal. I do suspect that the batteries were on the low side at the time I did the interviews, having been used for some hours already prior to the interviews. I'm just wondering what happens to voice over wireless if the batteries are low?

| I can retire now...maybe not Ty Ford 15:19:56 |
| | Pro Audio Review's esteemed editor/publisher John Gatski has graciously allowed me to write a feature story (instead of a review) about techniques and gear in my own studio. The concept for the story was how to make big sound in a small studio. You'll find it in the back of the most recent issue; August, I think.
Since this signifies the pinnacle of my career, I'm considering retirement because it's all downhill from here. To that end, my current options include repeating the phrase "Would you like fries with that?" to complete strangers but, wait!........Apparently there's a new StarTrek game coming out and this coming week I'm booked to do four voices; Lo'Tal, a Romulan Captain; Klingon Captain 4; Enterprise Captain 4 (Sommerset) and a TOS crew member.
All suggestions are appreciated.
Life is truly surreal.

I on the other hand am a changed man - the anti-psychotics are working wonders on stopping the voices, and even the people at the local Shop 'N Bag don't cower with fear when I enter (with a carer).

| Sony Budokan walkman--- Anyone remember this thing? Guest 11:46:05 |
| | I know, not really the appropriate venue for this discussion, but I figured if there was a group of people on the Internet that might contain someone who owns one of these "holy grail" items, this would be it. I remember coveting it as a child, seeing it in the display at the department store, price tag around $300.00 (in the early 80's). It's a Sony cassette Walkman with something like 2 Watts of power running into huge sealed cans. Notice how little you will find about this thing on the web. I am pretty sure I have the spelling right, as I did find a few hits on this. Anyone own one? Where can I find one? I already own the other piece of covetted 80's electronic relics of my childhood dreams, the Conion 100F Boom box.

| Boom Recorder 7.5 released Take Vos 07:17:01 |
| | Hello everyone,
I've just released Boom Recorder 7.5 - Changed "New Take" function, by using the normal record button and a preferences setting. - %f are now numbered from 1, instead from 0. - Set file and folder limitations of Lite licenses to be equal to the Pro license. - Copies a simple soundlog.xsl for viewing soundlog.xml in Safari, still subject to change.
I am still working on the new sound log functionality. I hope that version 7.6 will re-populate the sound log; working from the audio files in the selected folders. This will make the soundlog.xml somewhat useful.
Cheers, Take

Have you selected the Audiophile as your output device? Go into Control Panel, select Sounds and Audio Devices, click the Audio tab, and select the Audiophile on the pull-down list under Sound Playback.

| The Red Army Choir Ruined My Earphones Msadkins04@Yahoo.Com 02:47:08 |
| | Well, not per se. As the Americans say, "here is the deal": I had never tried using Internet audio before. A caprice led me to attempt this, for the first time, in sampling the Red Army Choir. After searching Google, I clicked on a likely provider of online audio, and when the link connected, the video/audio of the Red Army Choir singing the Soviet National Anthem started *immediately* and automatically. I had no chance to adjust the volume level before starting play, and indeed, there was no volume control built into the player software of the site. (I was later able to determine that there is a master volume control, in the form of a completely unidentified slideable strip, in the lower right corner of the Firefox browser, outside the site content entirely.) I estimate that the volume was on the order of 150 decibels. (And no, this is NOT what I deserve for listening to the Red Army Choir.) I was using a pair of earphones made for Walkman-type use in the audio-out jack of the computer -- some Philips "surround-sound" earphones (a description which exists largely as advertising hyperbole), and I ripped out the plug from the jack very quickly.
The problem is an apparent change in the audio quality of the earphones, as used once again with the Walkman unit I had been habitually using them with. I cannot say that there is any unambiguous distortion in particular frequencies or in the audio as a whole, though it seems to me that some frequencies (horns show this particularly) are slightly scratchy. The quality of the audio seems, however, somehow noticeably poorer. The balance of frequencies has changed, for the worse. And these earphones, which had previously done a good job filtering out background noise (e.g., traffic) seem much less good at this now, even with the same music.
I am hoping that this is ear-damage (!) -- TEMPORARY ear-damage ONLY, of course -- rather than damage to the earphones. I am not sure what technical explanation, other than a rather vague "speaker blow-out" -- could be responsible for this, unless it is that one of the speakers was damaged more in these frequencies than the other (though I would expect the audio in question to have been mono, though perhaps not).

| Stereo crosstalk of 29dB? Guest 02:39:27 |
| | I just found out that one of my recorders has a "stereo crosstalk" of 29dB, according to a RightMark (I think it was called) test, and this was described as "very poor".
Could anyone elaborate about what the 29dB means? Will this level of crosstalk have a noticeable effect on the sound of stereo recordings?

| Regarding the "What Would You Have Done" post... Grouchy Sound Guy 01:14:07 |
| | This is the sign I put on our venue's stage. Can't say it always works, but it seems to get through to some people.
STAGE VOLUME & MONITORS
This is a small stage in a small room with a quality PA system capable of delivering loud, clear sound to the entire room. The volume on stage should not be so loud as to cause your singer to have problems hearing himself, cause the people in front of the stage discomfort, or create problems achieving a balanced and comfortable mix in the front of house mains speakers. If your volume is too loud we will ask you to turn it down. We want the entire band to sound great for everyone in attendance so please take this into consideration when setting your stage volume levels. Thank You.
MONITORS
We have 4 separate monitor mixes, with 5 monitor wedges. 2 wedges will always be used for the lead singer (I can always turn it down if it's too loud). If you will be using IEM's you should be able to run your own mix from stage. Stage monitors are for vocals and acoustic instruments. If your instrument is amplified on stage you should not need it in the monitors. Adding instruments to the monitor mix on a small stage only causes the monitor mix to become muddy and increases stage volume. If you can't hear your vocals in the monitors please ask the people next to you on stage to turn down their amps.
VOCALISTS
Please stay close on the microphone and sing loud. Talk loud between songs. It's a small stage and the higher the mic gain is set the more stage volume will bleed through the vocal mics, causing all of that stage volume to bleed into your monitor mix. If the audience can't hear and understand your vocals we have a problem. Help us make you sound your best. Good vocal mic technique equals a better sounding monitor mix and a better sounding mix out front.
GUITAR PLAYERS (And Steel, Fiddle, Etc.)
If you do not point your amp up at your ears you will probably have to play it at a lower stage volume or possibly aim the amp towards the rear or center of the stage. We have tilt-back amp stands that you can use, just ask if you need one. Try using your amp as a wedge monitor. Your ears are on the side of your head so why is your amp pointed at the back of your knees?
BASS PLAYERS
We have (8) 15" drivers and (4) 18" drivers with 6000 watts of power dedicated to those speakers. Your bass amp should be loud enough for you to hear yourself on stage, the PA system will do the rest. If you brought an amp with 15" or 18" drivers it will probably be louder in the room than it will be on stage unless you set the volume very low. If your stage amp is as loud, or louder, than what is coming out of the FOH mains there will be phase cancellation issues causing your bass to sound weak, muddy or even disappear in the mix. Placing the bass amp on the drum riser or tilting it at you like a floor wedge might help you hear and "feel" the bass better.
DRUMMERS
The drums will probably determine the stage volume for the rest of the band. If you're playing too loud everyone else will probably follow. Please maintain a stage volume that does not interfere with the vocalists' ability to hear their monitors and does not overpower the FOH mix. Breaking sticks is caused by playing too hard - if you're breaking sticks you're too loud for this stage.

| OT: Problems installing M-Audio USB Audiophile Malkz 00:16:16 |
| | I've tried re-installing the drivers for the M-Audio USB Audiophile interface but I can't get any sound out of the line outputs or the headphone sockets. If I crank the amp right up I get a very faint distorted signal. What am I doing wrong? p.s. installing on a Sony Vaio laptop, presently no problems with my M-Audio firewire 410.
On a second point, I need to buy a PC for audio using SX3 and am looking at Carillon Core 4 and Red Subs dual core extreme. It seems like with Red Sub you get more 'bang for bucks', anyone any experience or comments?
