| Logic 7 - I'm a little nervous Moebiusloop 19:53:52 |
| | I just posted something a little while ago but here goes another one.
OK. I just made the investment for my studio and I decided on leasing a Apple computer (quad 2.5) and I bought Logic 7. I can upgrade to the intel macs when they come out as per my lease. We'll see though.
Anyway, I was wondering about what people here thought about Logic 7: thoughts, misconceptions, things to look out for. I am just about to dig into it (once my studio is finished next week! hooray for 3 months of construction) and I have heard it is pretty difficult to get used to. I've used Pro Tools extensively for 5 years and I never had a problem learning that quickly.
Also- Seems that the plug-ins are TDM quality... i've heard samples first hand (using a TLM 103 condensor mic going into Avalon VT737 of course) and it sounded pretty legit.
Soooo. what do you think?

| To bridge, or not to bridge. Guest 19:49:17 |
| | PD1850 each side in a Wembley Loudspeakers 2820 reflex cabs.
QSC ex4000 driving them.
More than enough bass for me.
I only ever hire this out when I'm there to supervise, but have been asked for more bass.
I could parallel the speakers and bridge the amp, which would give me more than enough power for those drivers.
I could put the speakers in series and bridge the amp, which (theoretically I'm told) will give more output.
The budget is not there for extra boxes right now.
Comments? Recommendations?

| Recording master problem on radio broadcast Powell 16:19:25 |
| | A 30 second political radio ad was produced which consisted of a stereo recording with a mono tagline (Sound Forge). When the spots were actually broadcast the fidelity was severely damaged. A spectral analysis of the actual broadcast indicated a 12 dB loss in signal for the body of the message but the wave forms were similar otherwise. And yet the mono tagline ending was normal, that is to say the waveform was similar dynamics to that of other radio spots, loud and clear.
By sound comparison the broadcast sound of the body of the message was greatly attenuated, had a bottom-of-the-barrel sound effect and severe attenuation of presence.
The station engineer's DAW which uses Audition to enter spots into the proprietary data base could not determine any faults with my master or his equipment. When we played back the actual broadcast the station manager felt strongly that it was a phasing error. But the engineer was unable to get Audition to make either phase changes or generate a spectral analysis of phase rotation.
Any Ideas as to the source of the problem or an analytical tool or methodology to understanding this glitch?

| dobro... resonator guitars, mic technique Mfassett@Pacbell.Net 16:00:43 |
| | Hey everyone, going to be recording some dobro soon, which I've never done. Just looking for some starting points. Not looking for a traditional bluegrass sound, definitely a more modern sound.
My initial thought is to treat it as any other acoustic guitar, start with my usual mic a foot or so away from the 12th fret and move it around until I find the best spot... is there a better place, in your experience, to put the mic to start with? Is there a placement that is your go-to placement for dobro? I would imagine the resonator would change the go-to placement, I'm looking for your experience...
Also, I like my TLM-103 on many acoustic guitars, though my KSM-32 sounds better on my jumbo to me. I also have AKG C-414eb, C-414buls and C-535, Shure SM7, Oktava MC012. Any thoughts you'd want to add on go-to mic for this purpose would be apprecated too. Thanks!

| Solution to record multiple tracks to separate wav files Mick 15:20:50 |
| | We're looking for a solution that would be rack mountable that would allow us to record 6 separate tracks at the same time that would be saved as WAV files that we could offload to a PC.
Alternately, we could use a PC to record directly, but space is an issue, so if we could get a hard drive based recorder that would do it in a rack mount that would be preferred.
The goal is to be able to record several classes that we're running at the same time. Previously we've connected 5 wireless mics from the 5 adjacent rooms into one mixer and taken the output from those 5 tracks to our 5 mp3 recorders. It would be a LOT easier if we could pull this off with one device to do the recording.
Recommendations??? Thanks!
Mick

| | Anyone used one of these yet? I'm going to be mixing on a couple of them next weekend at a festival and want to know of any pitfalls or idiosyncrasies to watch out for.
Also, what is the memory card slot on them (compactflash/usb etc)? Will be useful to save my settings on Saturday for the gig at the other festival site on the Sunday since the rigs are identical at both sites.
Cheers,

| watts ohms and a headache Badbetty 10:02:48 |
| | Hello readers - thanks in advance for any comments.
I have realised I know little about sound reinforcement and PA systems.
I have a power amp (2 x 1000w into 4ohms) or (2 x 600w into 8ohms). To it I want to connect some speakers but I have run into a headache.
I have been told that with a bass bin (/sub) with passive crossover and satelite tops, that in truth only the load of the sub is seen by the amp.
e.g. 1 x sub @ 600w 4 ohms + connected satelite 400w @ 8 ohms - the amp really only sees the sub load and in the case of the amp above, it would fry it at full power.
so, does this mean if i had a 600w sub at 8ohm with an 8ohm 200w top (for instance) that this would be ok on the above amp because the sub is 600w at 8ohms.
or could i have a 400w sub @ 8ohm and a 300w top at 8ohm and this too would be ok? or would it be the same as i was first told - the 400w sub is all that is seen and it too would be fried.
anyway all this stuff is news to me (i thought i had a fair grasp but not anymore) and i want to ask you all about watts, ohms and subs + satelites; and what can i get (using passive crossover or just a full range perhaps) to hang off the above amp that will work best for a small rock band with everything mic'd up?
any comments on any/all of the above are really appreciated. Thank you.

| Cheaper alternative to TLM 193? Andy 03:55:59 |
| | Greetings from Italy,
I noticed that the prices for used TLM 193's are fair, but still kind of out of my range for now. I was wondering if there are cheaper ldc microphones that have the same sonic character, like "natural" and not overly bright. I read that someone here compared the Oktava mk-319 to the TLM 193, liking the TLM 193 only a little better. At the same time I heard about "boink" issues with the mk-319 and I don't know if Oktava fixed them yet. Or what are other alternatives?
Thank you, Andy

| SonicStage can't erase/write my CD-RWs Matti Lamprhey 00:25:09 |
| | If this is the wrong group, my apologies!
I've used SonicStage v1 and v2.1 for a while now to create ATRAC3 CDs. I wanted to produce a new ATRAC3 CD yesterday but SS couldn't seem to write to my CD-R or CD-RW discs, or to erase the CD-RWs. It can read audio CDs alright and rip them into the library, and Nero still works fine. Since SS last worked properly I've upgraded from XP SP1 to SP2 and added security software such as Norton AV 2006 and Webroot's SpySweeper.
I went to Sony's site and noticed that SS is now at v4.0, so I downloaded that and installed it. It makes no difference, unfortunately. When I try to erase a CD-RW disc, it gives the following error: "Initialization of the media failed. (Error code 0000662e)" and the message box was entitled "SonicStage (00001eea-1921)"
Attempting to create an ATRAC3 disc produces the error "Writing of the CD image failed." and invites a retry, which simply hangs.
I've got the latest Adaptec ASPI drivers (v4.71.2), and checked through Microsoft's knowledgebase in vain. Any ideas?
Matti

| mini omnis Mike 22:55:54 |
| | hello-
based off a discussion on another board - are miniature omnis ( like, lavs or the earthworks type mics) more susceptible to popping and or wind noise? along the same lines - is diaphragm size related at all to a mic being susceptible to popping?
I always figured the popping came from the bass boost on cardioids. i guess i've only experienced that kind of plosive. whenever I do have a problem like that I break out a 635 or - on a boomy guitar - an omni.
Any one have any knowledge on popping omnis and/or diaphragm size in relation to popping em they can share?
poping omnis - great band name.

| looking for a pair of small condenser omnidirectional mics... Zigo Zago 22:50:27 |
| | Hi all, I'm looking for a pair of small condenser omnidirectional mics. The budget I have is around 800 $, so I must exclude Neumann, Schoeps, etc. I tried to find a pair of used km 131 or KM183 but without success. I record classical music, and I already own a pair of Schoeps MK21, a pair of MK 2s and a pair of nemann KM 185, so this two new mics won't be my main stereo couple
Here's what I found (price is for pair), and wandering about your opinions or other mics...
Thanks,

| Mhmmm, Low Pass filter in Cubase SX (extracting Basslines ;-) Guest 21:33:50 |
| | I just don't get it. This one might seem trivial but how do I setup a clean Low Pass filter in Cubase SX?
Frequencies up to 400hz should pass and the remaining frequencies should be cut entirely. When I play around with the EQ settings I always get a "leakage" of higher frequencies, they slip through. Also, the pass filter is not clean since I'm looking for an EQ curve like an inverted "notch" allowing me to extract basslines.
Please let me know if this post is unclear and thanks for any suggestions.
Cheers, Antill
