BZZZZ in power line...

Mick 16 March 2006 07:42:49
In my house, I'm slowly assembling a home studio for mostly
writing purposes. However, I noticed that there was a constant
60Hz buzz I couldn't seem to eliminate. Even on a guitar with
humbuckers going straight to an amp, it was still there. I
went to the fusebox, and started shutting things down (without
the family there) and lo and behold, when I shut my daughter's
bedroom down, the hum went away! Now, there wasn't anything
turned on in her bedroom, but of course a few things were
plugged in.
Any ideas what might be causing this? I'm getting ready to
grab my DVM and go after it, but if y'all might have any
suggestions in advance, I'd be only too happy to listen...

The most egregious violators are touch lamps and lighting dimmers. But
could be all kinds of things, even TV sets or computers with lousy
switching supply designs.

You've already done the hard part: isolating it to which room.
Now it is a matter of unplugging everything in her room and
then replugging them one by one until you find the culprit.

Besides finding the source of the buzz, you'll want to make the power in
the studio relatively resistant to noise and spikes on the line in
general. Once you find the specific source of the buzz, leave it
plugged in for a while and see if you can eliminate the symptom anyway -
then remove the original source of the buzz as well.

If you haven't already done these things...
1. Make sure everything is connected to a single circuit in the studio,
and preferrably coming from the same outlet (also an easy way to make
sure it's the same circuit).
2. Install a power conditioner between the wall and the gear.

If none of that helps, you might actually be picking up EMI. Make sure
you have no signiificant ground loops in your setup. For info on how to
wire without ground loops, see the thread I started a month or 3 ago
where the helpful folks here helped pound the concepts into my thick skull.
