| Which software for midi and soft instruments? Federico 04:41:45 |
| | Hi, I want to buy a new computer and I want to dedicate it to Midi, soft instruments and soft samplers. I am a PT guy but I am not really confortable with Protools Midi editing... 15 years ago I really liked Cubase (running on Atari!!). I already have 2 Computers (one Mac with PT6.4TDM that I use for audio and one PC with PT6.4LE and Wavelab that I use for "mastering") and of course I will have to sync them.
Would you go Mac or PC? Double processor? How many HD? SATA? What "new" software would you swich to? Logic? Nuendo? DP? I don't know them at all. The computer will only run soft instruments (VST? Stand alone? RTAS?) and samplers and the audio card will probably be an RME with 8 channels of ADAT lightpipe.
Thanks F.
p.s. what soft sampler do you suggest?

| | Phil- you know more about electronics than most on this boardb
Could you comment on the following posts by Sax?
Thanks
.> > Are you on drugs? You said short at DC, I said DC resistance.
Yes, and you are wrong. A perfect coil has only inductance which is a> reactive load not resistive. You have stated that a piece of bare copper> wire is 5-6 ohms and I said it is a short. Try testing a piece of wire with> a meter and I think you will find it is a short. A DC short.
My position- a piece of wire is not a short. He simply cannot measure it with his equipment. ANY length of wire obviously has Some resistance.
Where this started is he insists a speaker coil is a short at DC. I say them why do the manufacturers say their coils are 5-6 ohms and why do they measure that?
You said a coil presented a short at DC. Look back and see. I proved you> > wrong.> Yes I did and you are wrong. He turned that into I said a piece of bare copper wire is is 5-6 ohms. He doesn't read well. Of course, for every guage there would be a length that equals that, but that is not what I said.
He then mumbles about reading an electronics book and posts the following:
Sax . I never said 90% of the stuff you said in your posts.> why yes you did, in fact you have restated it in this post that the DC value> of a coil is 5-6 ohms. Therefore, the reactive load is less for a 4 ohm> load making your coil, BY DEFINITION, a resistor with a paracitic> inductance.
He babbles on about coils having no resistance and so forth.
In summation-
What is your experience with the resistance of coils? Have you found working voice coils that measure zero ohms?
And ever found a piece of wire that measure zero ohms on an accurate meter?
Thanks. This guy is not only a headache, but a pain somewhere else too.
The problem is he doesn't know enough to know how little he does know.

| Final Cut Express vs Avid DV express? Rickymix 04:07:26 |
| | Hi y'all! I'm back from Bali and looking to get a simple video editing system to work on some surf footage I brought back. Figured I might as well learn something that might be of use to me in the future, while I'm at it. The two obvious contenders are Final Cut Express and Avid DV express, at about the same price. Any opinions on one over the other? I'm on a Mac G4 w/ 2 Gig ram, so I'm thinking Final Cut might integrate more smoothly? I checked the archives but it was all several years old. Thanks as always, Rick.

| Finally bought in Hal 02:42:03 |
| | Hi all, I finally bought in: g4 dual 1.25ghz, ghz ram, digi 001. The guy left on: Reason,Battery2, Protools 6.4, Digital Performer. One problem, which I knew about before buying, is that it's running Panther(which, some of these being older versions of software won't run on Tiger). The problem is, the mac won't boot with the digi 001 hooked up. You have to disconnect it for each boot up. ok, that's a fairly large pain. Is there some sort of in/out switch I could put in line with the digi? I believe it's a 64 pin. Input appreciated. Hal

| Filesize? J David Garnett 00:37:23 |
| | Having built up quite an archive of BBC comedy radio shows it is now time to catalogue them and as part of this I want to include the filesize.
Can anyone help me as to the formula needed to put in an Excel spreadsheet that if I put in the running time in minutes and seconds it will tell me the filesize in MB (where 1MB is 1,024k *not* 1,000k) when the track is recorded @ LP2.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

| Problem receiving ClassicFM Maurice Batey 20:58:16 |
| | I'm hoping someone here can either help directly or suggest another more suitable group.
I've just moved from by the sea near Lymington, Hants, where my JVC receiver could pull in a 1st-class signal for ClassicFM using just 3 ft of co-ax hung behind a cupboard as aerial, to an area between Farnham and Hindhead, where there is an odd problem with the signal.
(Because this is a fringe area I've had a VHF aerial installed above the roof and connected through a booster box that boosts all incoming UHF & VHF signals to the various sockets in the house.)
The odd thing about reception is that although the MUSIC on ClassicFM is beautifully clear, when the presenters start talking their VOICES are muffled and boomy (except for what I take to be pre-recorded commercials).
I cannot understand why that should be so. Suggestions, please?
Many thanks in advance...

| | Hi,
Although not that bad, I can hear what sounds like bias rocks or gravel when I record some test tones (10kHz and 1kHz) on my TEAC / TASCAM open reel recorders. Is the usual procedure to adjust / tweak the bias erase ?
Thanks for your reply.

Reality check Arny: Speakers are built at a price point. Cheap speakers = cheap parts. You get what you pay for. You might get lamps in series with HF drivers for some limited protection. Or trade off low end for a stiffer cone surround compliance and a little more margin for error.
The best protection circuit (and often defective) ever made is the one between your ears.

Much of it is marketing, of course, but Table 1 is interesting and they say> these are measured results of this current noise (as opposed to the regular> thermal noise) they are talking about. Having read it in more detail now, I'm inclined to complain to Vishay about some of it's content which is plainly incorrect !
They can't even spell Boltzmann correctly ( as in his constant ). http://www-history.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Boltzmann.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_Boltzmann http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boltzmann's_constant
They fail to mention carbon film which is very widely used. Instead they mention only the truly miserable carbon composition which is long obsolete and today unobtainable, I guess to make their product look fancier in comparison.
Some 'authenticity nuts' like to use carbon composition of course, which says a lot about their mental condition !
They make claims anbout 'noise free resistors' when such things don't even exist.
And several other example of total bollocks such as " The major objection to wirewounds, however, is the inductance that chops the peaks and fails to replicate the higher frequencies of the second and third harmonics."
I'd question their figures for metal film too.
Definitely written by the marketing dept and a poor show on Vishay's part.
